RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

Okay everybody I know we're all excited for the upcoming role-playing adventure (I know I am!) but we need some basic elements first.

RULES:
1. Talk in third person for continuity. I can't refer to all of you as "you".
2. You get one main character for which you will make all decisions for. When involving other (main) characters in your contribution, you must ask permission from their masters for any actions you would like to have them do via E-mail or convo, or simply wait for them to respond to your invitation.
Example:

"Leela waits patiently in the dark cell for Fry to bail her out. She see's a large figure approaching and shrieks in horror. ' It's just me Leela' Fry says"

If Fry and Leela have different masters and Leela's master did not contact Fry's master before involving him like this in her plot, this is NOT OKAY. What would be okay is:
"Leela waits patiently in the dark cell for Fry to bail her out." -Leela's master
"Leela see's a large figure approaching and shrieks in horror. ' It's just me Leela' Fry says" -Fry's Master

Any small decisions such as reactions, unnoticeable responses, humor and the like can be made for the other person by yourself, but romantic relationships, traveling, questing, selling of goods, and even certain actions of your character must be approved or posted by other person. Just consider if you would be mad if that action was made on behalf of you.

Another Example:
"Leela spied the bag around Fry's waist and ran up to him and snatched it, running away at lightning speed to a nearby forest with a grin on her face."
NOT okay because it presumes inactivity of Fry. I'm not saying thieving isn't allowed, it should just go like this:

"Leela spied the bag around Fry's waist and ran up to him and snatched it, and began dashing at lightning speed" -Leela's Master
"Fry felt a jerk on his waist and turned around to see someone running away with his pouch. He chased her down and pinned her."
Keep in mind the meaner you are or the more choice you take away from someone, the more they can take away from you. Excessive or repeated "decision stealing" may result in game consequences such as jail or death, or the team consequence of being banned from role play. I don't anticipate this being a problem, just be considerate and don't make them do something out of character and you'll be fine.

3. Helping characters (a person's second or third character) do not need permission or approval for any action, and any action can be preformed with helping characters given it is not contradictory to previous events (if Fry is Leela's boyfriend, he can't also be your husband but you can be secret lovers if you're feeling dangerous). If you have a helping character you must accept where people drag them but you can help along at any point as long as it isn't contradictory. You can kill helping characters, drag them on adventures, make them bail you out of jail, and make them play jester for your amusement.

4. Unless specifically told to do so, do not scene change.

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

DESIGN:

I'm going to need two or three "world" maps for combining. I intend to take the best elements from all of them and combine them (with some plot necessary elements of my own) into one "world" map. This is a fictional setting and will need a variety of terrains with plenty of water. Please upload them to the new team photobucket Username: thesteampunkfactory Password: steamteam
upload maps to here: http://www.photobucket.com/steammaps

We will also need the two airship captains Arabella and Santiago to provide rough diagrams of their air vessels to this album: http://www.photobucket.com/steamairships
at their leisure. The vessels will not be permitted to leave the docks until proper documentation sketches have been provided.

One last design is required for now. I need someone to create a circular gear symbol and someone else to create a circular anchor symbol. Black and white is best, but all versions and revisions can be posted to http://www.photobucket.com/steamsymbols

Thank you guys for your help, if everyone reading this could just pick one task we'll get started in no time.

Robbie:
Most excellent! Nice shape. I hope we get some city names with the other maps people put up. don't worry about the "roughness", I intend on doing the final draft in watercolor. It's just important to have as many players as possible have a say in the setting we'll be playing in. Nice Job!

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

I'm currently working on a brief history of the countries as far as territories and wars are concerned and hope to also bring you a detailed map of the cities New Cracow, Salzburg and Bern.

We still need symbol ideas and airship diagrams. If anyone has a spare coat of arms on hand that would be useful as well.

The Roleplay is scheduled to start THIS WEDNESDAY and let me assure you, it will be epic.

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

I apologize, but I'm confused. Could someone explain this to me as though they are explaining it to a 5-6 year old who has never played this before. Where are the maps? Do we just post here? Are we supposed to have goals for our characters? How many characters do we get, how many main, how many supporting? Are the main characters the 'masters' of the supporting cast? Is this a game or competition? Is it a random cooperative story biulding event? Do we need story currency? Do we need weapons? Housing? Income? Can we buy things in story? Can we sell things in story? Real things and/or fiction things? I do apologize, but I am cinfused and have a lot of questions on how to proceed. Never done this before and it seems written with some assumptions of how this works. Thanks for your times and attentions!!!

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

Sadie: Those are great! Definitely using the lightning/gear one and the map will possibly be incorporated into North America or possibly it's own island, we will see.

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

Patrick: All Good questions. The maps are here:
http://s1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh546/thesteampunkfactory/

user: thesteampunkfactory
pword: steamteam

I will create another thread specifically for the roleplay. In this ROLEPLAY thread we will talk in third person about mostly our 1 main character.
You may include up to 2 helping characters that other people may call on or steal away for an adventure. You may all have small goals/personal goals that may or may not include other characters. For example Captain Arabella is required to help the Cogsbanes recapture their stolen ship as part of her dues to society for pirating. These personal stories you will create on your own or I will convo you if I have an idea. I use the term "masters" to refer to us, Paige, Patrick, and Sadie in the real world.

This is definitely NOT a competition. I think cooperative story building is a good way to put it.
Depending on your country, there may be different currencies, but gold, silver and bronze are accepted universally. You can absolutely buy, and sell fictional things in the story. I intend on having "artifacts" as well (whether made by me or a team member) that are real world items from the story that can be won, bought, auctioned, or any combination and may be important plot elements.

Your weapons, housing, income and starting wares are mostly up to you. There is an upper limit, I would not suggest an income above 10 Gold pieces a week, bad things tend to happen to the wealthy. Also, unless you receive a convo from me today, you start with only 10 gold in your possession. Currency explanation coming.

The important thing to recognize is the goal of your character is not necessarily to gain wealth. You may want to cause havoc, fall in love, or work on the mystery of the overall plot. Most of all, make it interesting. Don't go easy on yourself. You know exactly how far you can be stretched before giving up; test your limits. However, just because something isn't life-threatening doesn't mean it's not worth writing. Bazaar is a great place for goofing off.

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

Thank you so much!!! So... will each map have specific parameters within which we act or roleplay? Also, when it says we can start anywhere, can we start on an airship? Thanks again!!!!!

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

Currency:
20 Bronze = 4 Silver = 1 Gold

or 1 Bronze is worth 1 Bronze
1 Silver is worth 5 Bronzes
1 Gold is worth 20 Bronzes

New Germany (as well as the city of New Cracow) accept the Deutsche Mark as well as metals.
The Czech Republic accepts koruna, metals and the Euro.
Roam will only accept the Roama. They are a stubborn people.
The base country of Tuam accepts metals and uranium certificates (though not everyone will trade for these, they are extremely useful).
Most everyone not mentioned will accept the Euro and metals.

Seems like a lot, you do not have to memorize it or use it at all. Just know everyone except Roam accepts the metals above. You may be given other currencies, if this is so, this is where you can spend them.

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

So obviously people like airship captains can earn money by taking people from place to place, but how does someone like me earn money? I can't exactly assassinate the other players!

Re: RolePlay Set-up/Design and Rules

Thank you Robbie, I forgot: there's main characters, helping characters and extras. Extras would be shop keepers, (people you want to assassinate), Lab workers, miners... you know... anyone who's name is irrelevant. The people that come and go throughout the story. You can run into as many extras as you need. The line between extras and helping characters is fuzzy but the main differences are: extras are not intended to stick around or play important roles, extras do not get character development on googledocs. I'm not going to be a stickler on the number of helping characters/extras, it is only important that you have one main character.
