Re: Remember when....

@GielDesigns

I saw pictures of the ones with the dial.  I remember when it had the dial (before the buttons)

Re: Remember when....

@pigeonplumtree  The first one I remember had buttons but I've seen pictures of the rotary one.  I guess the phone only had a regular ring because Snoopy didn't do any real talking.

Re: Remember when....

Did you have a vinyl kids' wallet? I did. I still have it. I picked it out and bought it myself when I was 4 years old with a five dollar bill that my grandma gave to me.

I cherish that little wallet. It was my very first one.

Re: Remember when....

@GielDesigns  My kids put everything on their phones. I never do. If they lost their phones, they lose so much information.

Best tip I got was to put my kids phone numbers, on a bit of paper in the glove box. That way if you had any problems or an accident, they could be contacted. What if your phone got lost while you were out and you need to contact them? There is no way I could remember my kids mobile phone numbers.

All your info in one place..... I hate that.

Re: Remember when....

@Teddyrose54   I completely agree with you.  I know people who keep their lives in their phones too.  I don't trust technology enough to do that.  Similar to you, I keep a handwritten list of important phone numbers in my wallet.

I have fantasies of ripping phones out of certain people's hands and flinging them out the window.  Especially at Christmas... when we're all opening presents.   I could scream.  Seriously?  You have to text someone while opening Christmas presents?

The one gadget that really makes me laugh is "where is my phone" or "find my phone" , but if you don't know where it is you can't press that button..@pigeonplumtree

Remember when...

you called at any company or business and there was always a human answering the telephone.

Nowadays, when I get an answering machine, I just hung up.  I do not have the patience to listen to a large index option to select which number to push in order to get to a new directory to push a new button follow by the # key and then say a word like buy complain report and the answering machine does not understand my words.  It is as annoying as reading the previous sentence without a comma.

Re: Remember when....

Today I was kept on hold for 20 minutes before I spoke to a human being. Actually, that's very mild compared to some waits I've had to endure.

Don't you hate the music that's played when you have been kept on hold, the same drivel, over and over? Makes me want to tear my hair out.

A girl told me she called to a beer company. She was on hold with excessive beer advertisement, she felt a little drunk.

Re: Remember when....

I hate it worse when you are supposedly "transferred" to an operator and then it hangs up on you. You call back and are at the end of the line again.

I tried to use my cell phone to call our landline company yesterday to report the landline out of service.  Their "system" refused to take the call as I was not calling from the landline number--DUH!

Re: Remember when....

I've waited 45 minutes before the call was answered, they played the "Your call is important to us" recording over and over again during that 45 minutes = |

I've also tried calling them first thing in the morning, was hoping that I could be the first before there was a queue. I did get to speak to someone but they "accidentally" cut the line off when the problem I reported was too much for them, probably too early for them, they might not have had the chance to grab a coffee yet.

Re: Remember when....

I once complained to a CS rep that I finally got how hard it was to "get to a human". she laughed and told the "secret" is to keep repeating the word "pumpernickel" over and over every time it tells you to do something and you will get transferred immediately. She said it totally confuses the AI "System. I have treid that and it does work a lot of times--sometimes not. (Did not yesterday)

Re: Remember when....

Going through the phone automated system is just like clicking on the "Help" pages going through from one question to another, they get you read through all the default answers, make you go round and round in circles. They do everything they can to make the "queue" short, they don't really want anyone to contact them so easily.

Yes, I hate it when the Telephone Tree asks you to speak into it and doesn't understand, transfers you to an operator that keeps you on hold forever.

Re: Remember when....

we were such daredevils. we lived in an apartment complex where the playground was on concrete and no grass to be seen. There was a steel bar in front of the swings. we used to see how high we could swing then launch ourselves over that bar. it's a wonder we all grew to adulthood with everything intact.

Re: Remember when....

@designbcb   Sounds like the swings we would stand on instead of sitting. Just a flat metal seat and two chains.  We would swing high enough to feel like we were floating for a second or so.  And if you fell off -- oh well.  Like you said, it's a miracle we made it through.

Don't take it literally. They had cholesterol, but it was not considered as dangerous as nowadays.

I think it had a lot to do with them being more active. Not many computers, they walked more, not many gyms, lots of manual work, etc

You just burned it off back then. My doctor just said everything in moderation, and lots of activity. I'm working on it......no really I am ; )

Re: Remember when....

" We are getting a high volumn of calls".................well hire more people then.

Or if you call to complain about a fault with their product.

" We are getting more calls than normal." So really you're saying your product is crap. By the time I have finished, both me and the call centre are in fits of laughter.

And I love those surveys that call you back, to ask how they're doing. I so want to start my own press 1 for Monday, press 128 to report a fault.
