I stopped at the gas station and when walking back to my car noticied a piece of plastic hanging down on the front end. It was cold, wet and snowy. My brother tied the piece in place whith the dental floss I keep in my car. It worked until we got back to my house. Now it is held in place with zip ties until the snow clears up and the weather gets a little warmer.
Do you have stories about creative ways you've had to do an emergency repair?
As a hygienist of many years I love that you used dental floss as a quick fix. It really is surprisingly strong. 😀
I use dental floss at Thanksgiving to tie up my turkey legs. Unflavored, of course.
I used a safety pin to fix the strap on my dress the other night :{ I'm ashamed to admit it... but I didn't have time to sew it... we were just about to leave the house to go out and I pulled a thread on my dress strap and it came loose :{ Next time I'll remember not to pull the dang thread! :{
I had my front side car bumper get caught on a rock and come away about 5 inches from the rest of the car. I taped it with clear packing tape and it stayed that way for several years.
When it started to get grotty looking, I replaced it with duct tape which was a color similar to my car at that time. Had to replace that once a year.
Had it taped a total of about 5 yrs.
I have used hot glue to repair many things including rugs, shoes and just about everything else.
Yesterday I made a patchwork type small tabletop quilt ( about 10 X 10 inches) using fabric swatch samples i found in a free box. Just using hot glue. It looks cute if I do say so myself!
Mila- i have to say that we don't live in snow country.
I admire your quick and inventive thinking fix your car boo boo.
I use dental floss to cut through soft things like cookie dough. I also use it to sew buttons on rugged outdoor clothing and gear.
I love the button idea! The last time I bought thread it was really crappy and broke easily.
I used a stapler to fix the hem in a skirt I was wearing .
I did that years ago. At work I discovered a hole. No one had a safety pin, so I borrowed a stapler to temporarily repair it and finished my day.
No bandaids? Use scotch tape for minor cuts.
I just repaired some old books (bindings falling apart) with super glue, it's my go to for everything. I just have to remember to wear gloves when using it, or I wind up super gluing myself. :)
Best wishes,
I once tried to super glued the rear view mirror in my car and I got super glue on the new pants I was wearing at the time = {
Yeah, it has that tendency to get everywhere. I got some on my thumb once and it took over a week to wear off, even with repeated scrubbing.
Best wishes,
Baby oil or vegatable oil breaks down Super Glue and helps get it off from your skin.
I used packing brown tape to hold my car's side mirror on my way back to home from work.
When we were young and broke (as opposed to being old and broke), my husband once fixed a hole in the tailpipe on my car with a Campbell's soup can and God knows what else. It worked so we never paid to get it fixed! @Former_Member , I've used that stapler trick, too!
Now I remember what I use floss for - when dividing a cake layer into two thin layers - it is the dream
That is a great Idea.
I had large holes on the bottom of a pair of very comfy shoes that I was reluctant to throw away. I used aquarium sealant to seal the holes inside and out and am still wearing the shoes.
That's a good tip for shoe repair. I hate when I get a little crack on the sole of my shoe and then have to deal with wet feet every time it is raining or snowing.
I recently used a piece of grass to fix my flip flop that broke when I was still 1.5km from home :) (it was WAY too hot to walk home barefoot on the cement).
I learned the other day that olive oil will remove wood stain off skin. THAT was very, very useful.
