People and things that are trying your patience

Just had an inspection carried out by the letting agency, it was unpleasant. First they sent me an email with a letter attached letting me know that they are coming in today to do the inspection. The email basically just said please see the letter attached and the letter simply states the date and time slot. Yesterday they called me on the phone and said they called because they didn't get a reply from me to their email. I said the email or letter didn't ask for a reply, the agent insisted that the email said at the bottom to reply if the appointment date/time is not convenient. I didn't want to argue so I said oh ok sorry maybe I've missed it.

Today the agent turned up, first off after shaking hands she said my hand was cold then she made a comment about the place looking more like an office than home, I was thinking you are here to inspect the place to make sure the place is kept clean and in order, I don't need your opinion of what you think how I live and my lifestyle. Having someone come into your home is already making me feel my privacy being invaded but I understand that they want to be sure their property is being kept in good condition so they have to do the inspection. Although I also believe this is just another service that they provide to the landlord so they can charge them another fee. I expected them to come in and have a look around but not here to give their opinions and asking loads of questions. She asked me what I do and about my work, I was really not in the mood of explaining my job, who and where my customers are. I just wanted her to check the place and get it done with so I can get on with my day. I was given a 3 hours slot and I've been up early waiting.

This is not the first encounter with this agency that I find them trying my patience, both her and the other agent getting things fixed. It's very hard to keep my cool and at times I just compromised, I let things go and let them off, I just didn't want to complicate things.

On her way out she said see you in 3 months =-O Seriously they are doing this every 3 months?? It's a bit too much isn't it?

@artbesicwood. I rent also since selling my house after my husband passed. Every 3 months inspection...good grief that is unbelievable! I would not have answered any of her personal questions...it's just none of their business. Just do your job and get out! And I am a very laid back type of person. A Hospice nurse semi retired. My patience is unlimited usually. But this kind of 'inspection' is beyond me and the nerve it takes.

Here's one for ya. We were just notified last month that any resident who had a dog(s) had to submit them to a DNA test! They're trying to eliminate dog poo on the lawns. This is no joke. We had to schedule an appt. with the front office. If you don't bring your dog in for testing you chance being evicted for not following rules! Evicted!

If poo turns out to be your dog's poo first offense is $150, second offense is $250 and third offense is $400 and a possible eviction. Are you believing this?

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@SewNSewSister Yes see you in 3 months she said, literally on her way out o the front door. I restained myself saying anything to that, if I had to respond to that then my response would have been... you doing this every 3 months?? That's a bit too much isn't it? I didn't say anything and she turned her head to look at me. She seriously needs to learn, she shouldn't walk into someone's house, think she can just open her mouth making comments, giving her opinions and questioning. She is here to inspect so inspect and go. I don't even know what she has written down on her report which is like a checklist with boxes.

In fact, this inspection is not due until 2 weeks from now, like I said I didn't want to complicate things so I just let them come when they set up this appoinitment. It's more to fit into their schedule, for their convenience. Now she wants to do this again in 3 months from now??

I'm sorry to hear that your husband passd away and that you had to sell your house to go back to renting. Renting has no privacy, some landlord or letting agency think they have the right to just come into your house any time. They think it's ok to send constructor in with key to open your front door. I never let them do that, I would rather take time off to be here, I can't let a stranger wandering around in my house with no supervision. This agency makes it sound like I'm being fussy for doing that, I really want to ask them this question... would you let someone you don't know enter your home by themselves and stay around there without you there? How would you like it if it's your house? Would you not feel your privacy being invaded? It's like an open house that people get to see everything you have there.

The dog's DNA test requirement I've never heard of, is that by law they can make everyone do it? I hope they are not making residents pay for the test too.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@Artbesico. I understand people who own properties want to protect their investment. I do. But sometimes I think they forget they're dealing with real people. The very people who make it possible for them to keep owning that property. They usually hire others to maintain and monitor their properties for them. It's just a shame owners don't check up and critique those people they pay to do the job for them. It's just unbelievable some of the 'requirements' a renter has to go thru and put up with just to have a place to call home.

No, it's not a law in the U.S. that dogs have to have a DNA test. But I live in a County that likes to keep up appearances. And where I live it is nice. And because it is nice it gives them a reason to keep raising the rent at the end of your lease! What is worse, there is no law that says they can't make any rule they want and pass it along to the renter.

There's just no winning when you rent. It's their way or the highway!

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

Letting agencies these days are just all about charging fees for anything that they can come up with, they charge both the landlord and the tenant. Sometimes it's less complicated renting from a private landlord, all communications are between the landlord and the tenant.

i'm sorry you did not get the notice of the interstellar bypass. clearly it was posted in the office... ;)

seriously, art, i'm sorry. that stinks! nosy twit. every 3 months? geesh...

this is why we got off hud. they were too damned invasive. they called my dolls clutter and my coffee cup by my computer dirty dishes! we pay our own rent and nobody comes to inspect.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

I think I was being too nice and kind, when she bluntly threw out a line of questioning like this is like an office, do you work from home, this is your home isn't it, what do you do... It threw me but I was still trying to be considerate. I could have said to her what kind of question is that? Of course this is my home, I'm paying rent and I live here so yeah this is MY home.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@SewNSewSister . ps, condolences. i'm really sorry. when my grandmother was last in the hospital they sent the hospice nurse over because my counselor thought i was going to fall apart alone unless i got some practical help to prepare. so i know how priceless hospice is! she came and i was a wreck. i mean she had to literally dress and feed me because i had broken down with having had to watch over grandma sooo many hours towards the end, with her not getting it that she was dying, not realizing she had oxygen going and begging for oxygen... it was pure unadulterated hell i would not wish on my worst enemy, not even a politician.

@Artbesico . thanks but grandma was abusive. it took me 6 months after she died to start to heal. i mourned grandpa but not her. she chain smoked and is why i still have breathing problems. she pretty much killed herself and made like hellonearth for me. so the condolences are the loss of the first 25 poisioned years of my life. she died with half a lung left. she died of liver failure. the last time i had known her to be civil was in the 60's.

i miss grandpa. he may be watching over me. he died in his sleep in 1984.

@vlmkpyae  I'm sorry to hear that too.  It's hard enough as it is without those extra difficulties.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@Former_Member. Caring for the very ill or dying is very stressful (to say the least) for those who are doing the care giving. Even as a Hospice nurse you are required to take a one month sabatical every year. The stress and empathy involved has its' affect on nurses too. But we love what we do. Sometimes family members cannot bear to see their loved one in this situation and prefer to not be around...and nurses are sometimes their patients' last link to this world. And we are blessed to be there truly. There really isn't much money to be made in this medical field, but every Hospice nurse will tell you they love what they do.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@vlmkpyae   @SewNSewSister

My condolences to both of you.  And to Mary, thank you for what you do.  When my Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I stopped working and took care of her at home.  We had quite a journey together as she lived with it for the next 16 years.  During the last few months, we had such an amazing hospice team.  I don't know what I would've done without them, especially the nurse.  She was truly a gift.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@GielDesigns. Bless your heart for handling a most difficult time in a child's life. I applaud your devotion to your mother.

I believe Alzheimer's to be worse than cancer. At least with cancer there is a chance at healing and a possible cure. That is not the case with Alzheimer's. I've had so many patients with it. Each one differently affected. But all with the same ending. Believe it or not, they are the patients I bonded with the most.

I knew the night my husband would pass. I layed in bed with him with my ear on his heart and heard his last heart beat. I felt absolutely priviledged that I had him to the very end.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@SewNSewSister   Thank you for your kind words.  And how special to be with your husband until that last heartbeat.  I sat with Mom and did my "I'll be fine" talk the night before she passed.  The next day, I cleaned her up then went downstairs to do laundry for about half-an-hour.  When I came back up, she was gone.  (I wonder sometimes if she purposely waited until I left the room, lol.)  I also agree with you about Alzheimer's.  It's horrible.  During her last couple of days, Mom couldn't speak and had forgotten how to swallow.  She'd had thyroid cancer several years before. She was able to beat that and never had a recurrence.

@GielDesigns I stayed overnight in the hospital with my mum, my siblings have all gone home for some rest. Mum passed away the next morning, I was the only one with her at the time. Some days I really really really miss my mum.

Thanks, guys. By far, the hardest thing I've ever done but if I had to do it again, I would. Mom was the best. :-)

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@GielDesigns Reading that made me want to cry, my heart feels tons heavy. I dream of my mum every now and then, it's like my mum coming to visit, we just hang out, sit around and chat. It always felt good waking up from a dream with her coming to see me, felt like we were just spending some time together. Just the other night, I dreamt about my grandma, first time I believe, I hugged her so tight. That same night I dreamt about my mum and dad too.

Re: People and things that are trying your patience

@Artbesico   Sorry about that, Art.  I didn't mean to bring on those emotions but I know just how you feel.  I tend to get teary when this subject comes up too.  I miss my Mom and Dad like crazy.  Sometimes I think of them and laugh but other times I get really sad because they're not around anymore.  I took care of Dad too but he passed long before Mom.  They had been married 54 years when he went.  I know it's hard to lose parents when you're young, but now I'm not convinced it's much easier when we're older either. ((hugs))
