Holiday Boot Camp 2013

I have received the following message from Etsy Admin about this year's 'Holiday Boot Camp' initiative. Are any of you interested? If so, please take a look at the links below and then post a message in this thread in order to find a partner that you can team up with!

__________________________________________.

Original message from Laetitia at Etsy:

Hi there!

I hope you are well and getting excited for Christmas! This is an important time of year for all Etsy sellers. Starting at the beginning of October we have an excellent opportunity to funnel that productive energy into getting prepared for the Christmas gift-buying season with our Holiday Boot Camp. This year the program will be emailed twice a week to those who sign up. It will include valuable information on how to get prepared for Etsy’s busiest season.

In addition to signing up for the emailed program, we suggest starting discussions in your own Team on each of the weekly topics and encourage your members to find a partner. You can set people up with partners by making the matches yourself or start a thread in your Team for people to list if they are interested in a partner and let them match themselves up.

We have a list of questions and topics to discuss in your Team each week that we share with you each Friday via convo. We hope these will be helpful conversation starters so your Team can exchange information specific to your location and circumstances.

For more information, please check the seller handbook here :
www.etsy.com/blog/en/2013/register-for-holiday-bootcamp-2013/
You can sign up here : www.etsy.com/emails/seminars
We advise you to open a thread about Holiday Boot Camp in your team and share the links and information above. More information is also coming on our European blogs on Monday, e.g. how to host a Boot Camp in your team, how to find a Boot Camp buddy...

Let us know if you have any questions and here’s to a bountiful Christmas season!
Best Wishes,
Laetitia

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Etsy have been sending me the Holiday Boot Camp emails. I will post the contents here so that everyone can see them:

Welcome to Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson One

Break New Ground

Hi there,

Welcome to Etsy Holiday Boot Camp! Over the next four weeks, we’ll be sharing lessons, worksheets and resources designed to help you get your shop in shape for the holiday season. Each week you will receive two emails addressing the week’s theme. Each email will include a lesson, extra-credit reading and more for you to work on at your own pace. So, grab a mug of cocoa and let’s jump right in, shall we?

Set a Goal for Success

Before heading out on a road trip, you have a destination in mind. You pack appropriate outfits, read up on local spots and map out the best route before putting gas in the tank and pedal to the metal — the same is true for your Etsy shop. Before blazing ahead into shop preparation for the season, take some time to get your bearings by setting a goal.

Set a Goal

Take a step back. Think about what you want to get out of your shop with the time and resources you are truly able to dedicate to fueling that success. A strong goal will help you chart your course through the holiday season. It should be specific, attainable and work within the time constraints of the holidays while staying true to the spirit, themes and business demands of the season.

Your goal should address questions like:

• What do you want to accomplish and why?
• What tools and knowledge will you need?
• How much time will it take to achieve?
• How will it challenge you to develop your shop?
• How will this goal enhance your holiday season?
• What business lessons will you learn?

Once your goal is solidified, you can start planning steps to achieve it. Our Holiday Calendar Checklist will start you off with a few key dates to keep in mind. Add your own important checkpoints and tasks to make it your own — you can use this calendar as a road map to make sure you’re on track.

Extra Credit:

• Register for our online video workshop, Set Goals and Streamline for Holiday Success. This Friday, October 11, Etsy Seller Jenny N Design will talk about setting goals, standards and workflow processes.
• Share your progress on social media with #EtsyHolidayBootCamp.

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Two

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Two

Break New Ground

Hi there,

Remember the SMART goal you made last lesson? Take a minute to find your goal and and read it aloud. Does it get you excited to work toward new shop challenges for the season? If not, make some tweaks so your goal is memorable and motivating before diving into today’s exercise.

Make an Action Plan

As you work through the upcoming Holiday Boot Camp lessons, use your goal and the Holiday Planning Calendar to stay on a focused path. To keep your eyes on the prize, try these tips:

1. Team Up: Challenges are more fun with some support in place. Find a friend or a member of an Etsy Team to be your Holiday Boot Camp partner. Make a plan to keep each other accountable and on track.

2. Break It Down: Keeping your goal in mind as a guiding light, make a list of milestones that will lead to its completion. As noted in Ready for Success? Start With an Etsy Goal, “Major milestones are the significant points in development. Major milestones aren’t a ‘to-do’ list per se. Major milestones are the significant achievements that you accomplish along the way to the finish line of your goal.” Once you’ve set these milestones, you’re ready to break your work into actionable steps. Think of these as bite-size tasks that take you one step closer to accomplishing your major milestones.

3. Make Reminders: Think of your goal as a motivational poster, just for you. Leave it in strategic spots to serve as an ongoing reminder of your mission. Make a banner or a drawing featuring your goal. Tape it above your mirror and on the door. Tuck a copy in your wallet. Set it as the background on your computer and phone.

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Next Week's Topics for Holiday Boot Camp - a message I have received from etsy as team leader:

Hi there!

It’s us again, the European Community Program people. My name is Antje and I work in Etsy’s Berlin office in Germany.
We are almost done with the first week of the boot camp - on to week two, getting stocked! If you or your team mates forgot to sign up for the first week of emails, it’s not too late. Sign up here to join in now:
www.etsy.com/emails/seminars

Next week’s topic is all about finding the best gift items in your shop and getting stocked. Here are a few more questions to get the conversation started in your Team:

- Which items of your shop was your best selling last year? Do you think it will be popular again this year? Do you plan to craft more of this item?
- Do you see any big trends for the upcoming Holidays season?
- Do you have some special Holiday variations for your items? (colors like red, green, gold, silver or shapes like stars, Holiday messages for postcard for example, calendars with your photography ...)
- Will you list additional quantity of each item for the Holiday season?
- How do you ensure you have enough products in stock to avoid being out of stock?
- Have you ordered enough material to make extra stock if needed?
- Do you add gift certificates in your shop?
- Do you offer sets of 2 or more items that can be bought together?
- Do you think about adding or adapting items for Hannukah, Saint Nicolas, Kwanzaa?
- Which items do you feature in your shop : most popular, new products, seasonal items…?
- Do you add a Holiday-specific category in your shop, prices specific categories (like gift under 15€/30€/50€/100€…) or recipient-specific categories (gift for baby/men/women…) ?

There are lots of small changes you can make now that will help you manage your shop and entice Christmas buyers.
- Do you add links into your descriptions to your categories to increase multiple sale?
- Do you add photos of gift wrapped items in your listings? Do you show your packaging?
- Do you update pictures or product descriptions for the Holidays?
- Do you offer gift wrapping?
- Do you give to buyer the possibility to add a note/card in the package?
- Do you know people ready to assist you if you need to craft more items / send loads of orders during the Holidays?
- Do you have downloaded the Etsy app to be sure you can quickly add more quantity if your item is sold out wherever you are?
- Do you stock more supplies to be able to craft more items if needed?
- How do you estimate the quantity of packing supplies to ship your orders for the Holiday season?

Join us in the Europe+ Captains Team for more ideas on getting stocked. Thanks for being such an awesome Leader in the Etsy community.

Best Wishes,
Antje

Another message re. Holiday Boot Camp:

Hi there!

It’s me again, Antje.
If you or your team mates missed to sign up for the Holiday Boot Camp, it’s not too late. Sign up here to join in now:
www.etsy.com/emails/seminars

We are forging ahead to week three of the boot camp. This coming week will be all about marketing. Marketing as a Team can help expand your reach as each individual shop reaches out to their own network, increasing the total number of eyes on your promotions.

+++The Pinterest Project+++

Does your team have a Pinterest account? Why not using this for a quick and fun pin-it-forward game to show the greatness and variety of your teams giftworthy products?

Make a Christmas-themed board with the name “Etsy Gifts from Europe”
Pin to our Christmas-themed board
- Pin at least 10 items
- 5 of which should be from other European teams (find them here! www.etsy.com/de/teams/18860/europe-captains)
- Tag all with #EtsyEurope and your Team tag or the other Team’s tag if applicable.
- Share a link to your board in the Europe+ Captains team.
- Promote your board in social media using your tags (#EtsyEurope, #YourTeam, #YourShop, etc.)

Use the hashtag #EtsyEurope
Use your Team tag

Your Team could also make boards along these themes:
- Gift Guides (men, women, kids, your dad, dogs, teacher, colleagues etc.)
- Christmas Decorations (ornaments, wreaths, Christmas trees, table decorations, special cutlery or ceramics, stockings, fireplace decor)
- Christmas Sweaters
- Stocking Stuffers
- DIY Gifts
- Last minute gifts
- Christmas Cards
- Gift Wrappings

Marketing your shop during the Christmas season is incredibly important! Buyers from overseas will need to get their orders in with plenty of time so enticing them now is crucial! Once those deadlines have passed, don’t fret. Then it will be time to turn your attention to local buyers. We’ll be using the hashtag #EtsyEurope to show off your great work. Please use this tag in your promotions too!

Join us in the Europe+ Captains Team for more ideas and inspiring questions to share on marketing and promotion during the holidays: www.etsy.com/de/teams/18860/europe-captains
Thanks for being such an awesome Leader in the Etsy community.

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Lesson Three:

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Three

Burst Forth

Hi there,

While brick-and-mortar stores break out the festive decor and hit play on seasonal soundtracks, you can create the same merry shopping experience in your Etsy shop. Small branding and merchandising touches can go a long way to entice shoppers and plant the idea for gift shopping. Refresh the visual elements and communication channels in your shop to set the scene for holiday shoppers.

Tackle this week's lesson and register for Friday's online workshop Merchandising Matters with Etsy Admin.

Reserve Your Spot

Think about your favorite catalog, magazine or store window – what sort of designs, packaging, imagery, props and messaging do they deploy for each seasonal campaign? What caught your eye and made it so memorable? Your shop announcement, banner, avatar, profile and shop policies all work together to tell your shop’s story for the season.

Infuse these elements of your shop with a holiday spice:

1. Shop Announcement: What information is your Shop Announcement broadcasting? Update it for the holidays to highlight your shipping timeline, custom order information and any holiday specials you may be offering. Make it clear what personalized gifts you offer for the holidays, if you’ll include a note with gift orders, holiday shipping options and what the cut-off dates are for placing an order.

2. Banner and Avatar: Update your shop’s graphics with seasonal flair. Consider adding some festive graphics, colors or styling that connote the season. Or, if you have a motif you are using elsewhere in your shop, like for a seasonal product or for your holiday gift wrap, repeat it in your banner too to tie things together.

3. Profile: Make sure your location is accurate. This helps your shop and listings appear in local searches and can help you reach last-minute shoppers in your region. Go to Your Account > Profile. Begin typing your town or city name into the City field. Choose your location from the list of suggestions.

4. Shop Policies: Now is a good time to polish up your ground rules, and provide concise, fair descriptions of what buyers should expect when purchasing from your shop. You can edit your Shop Policies page by going to Your Shop > Info & Appearance > Policies. Make tweaks to your payment, shipping and refund information to be informative, positive and clear — and shed light on your business’ special sauce.

If you haven’t already, download the Holiday Planning Calendar and start filling it in with your personal deadlines to accomplish these tasks. In upcoming lessons we’ll build further on ideas for sprucing up your shop by digging into product photography, keywords, stocking inventory and shipping.

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Four

Burst Forth

Hi there,

What holiday message do your product photos send? For your Etsy shop, holiday photography is a mighty tool to appeal to holiday shoppers. You can craft imagery to communicate at a glance what your shop has to offer in this season of gift-giving, decorating and entertaining. Great listing photos give your shop an edge for inclusion in press coverage and marketing opportunities.

Photo Shoot Worksheet

If a picture is worth a thousand words, what will you say with the five listing photos available for each of your items? Use quality photographs to help shoppers visually understand how your line of products fits into their gift list. Major holiday shopping categories typically fit into one of these categories: decor and entertaining, gadgets and games, useful and utilitarian, personalization, keepsakes, novelty and stocking stuffers, favors and thank-you notes. As you stock your shop, consider how you can use photos to fit the types of categories shoppers are searching.

Help your products twinkle and shine with these steps:

1. Styling: Does your product make a great gift, decoration or holiday party favor? Thoughtfully arrange your photos to create a mood and context that conveys this use and best qualities. The product should take center stage, while a subtle background, relevant props and a cohesive color palette set the stage. For example, if you’re selling gift tags, photograph them attached to a nicely wrapped gift box with holiday motifs.

2. Packaging: Tis the season for gift-ready purchases. For gift items, your packaging is part of the product and will help you stand out. Also, the option to buy gift wrap in your shop can make a gift buyer’s decision even easier. Include a winning photo of packaging or gift wrap in the item listing, and highlight this offering in the description.

3. Stocking: Remember, the more items you have listed, the more chances shoppers have to find your shop. Wrap tips from Holiday Boot Camp into each listing to build a strong presence.

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Lesson Five - here goes:

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Five

Holiday Boot Camp

Hi there,

Your words have power! The titles, tags and descriptions you write for each listing drive traffic to your shop from Etsy’s search feature and outside search engines. Etsy sees a surge in traffic to the site during the holidays, so now is a prime time to make sure your shop language is packing a punch. When a shopper browses Etsy for a gift, they’ll type words into the search bar. Etsy matches shoppers' searches with keywords from item tags and titles to surface relevant search results. In turn, the power is in your hands to craft specific, search-worthy language to bring on the buyers.

Unlock Your Best Keywords

It’s time to make your shop’s language even smarter. First, we’re going to do some research. Head over to Etsy’s search bar and pretend you’re a shopper searching for one of your products. For example, say you’re searching for a bag. As you type ‘bag’ into the search bar, Etsy will auto-suggest the most popular real search terms that buyers are searching for on Etsy. Do you see terms on this list that describe your product? Add them to your tags and incorporate them into your titles to increase the listing’s search relevancy.

Brainstorm a list of specific words that a shopper might use to find your products on Etsy. Incorporate the best keywords you generate into your listings in these places:

1. Titles: Compose concise, descriptive titles that lead with the most pertinent information. Depending on the length, titles may get cut off in search engines, Etsy search and on mobile devices.

2. Descriptions: You’ve poured your spirit into building your shop, so let that personality and perspective shine through your words. Write in your own first-person voice as you tell the story of your items. Strive to keep item descriptions succinct and prioritize the most crucial information. Make it easy to find facts and details, and use lists to highlight key elements. If you offer custom versions of an item, make note of that too.

3. Tags: Each listing can have 13 tags – make them count! Tags should be specific, descriptive, relevant and accurate. A single tag may be a short descriptive phrase (such as "silver earrings" or “messenger bag”).

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Six

Holiday Boot Camp

Hi there,

Like a hostess who wants a good turnout at her party, it’s up to you to get the word out about your items this holiday season. Help shoppers discover the amazing holiday potential of your items by putting your social-sharing savvy to work.

By using your favorite social sharing tools, you can tap into a whole new audience of seasonal shoppers. If you have time to devote to multiple channels like Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest, go for it. If not, focus on the one you enjoy using the most. For this lesson, we’ll focus on Facebook, since it’s an easy and fun way to spread the word about your shop. To start constructing your holiday marketing plan, follow these tips:

Stay in touch. Use Facebook as a way to stay connected with your buyers — consider offering a holiday discount for your Facebook fans.

Share the love. Promotion doesn’t have to be all about you. By creating holiday-themed Treasuries highlighting other Etsy artists and creating Pinterest boards that mix in other items with your own, you can develop a network of followers who may, in turn, promote your items.

Be yourself. Remember what makes your Etsy shop unique: you. Incorporate elements of your personality, style, creative process and story into your promotion, and you’ll be on the right track to appeal to your ideal customers.

Think like a holiday shopper. Market your items based on what people are looking for. Generally speaking, shoppers are looking for gifts by type, price and recipient — or some combination of all three. Mention these selling points when Pinning, Tweeting or posting on Facebook about your items. Try posting a photo or two from your holiday photo shoot on your social media channels as well.

Attend an Online Workshop: Bring on the Buyers

Next Steps:

1.
Get connected. Once you have your Facebook Page set up, make sure you have connected it to your shop correctly by going to Your Shop > Settings, then selecting Connect with Facebook and following the prompts. The same applies for connecting your Etsy shop with Twitter.

2.
Build your network. Invite friends and family to like your Twitter and Facebook Page. Expand your circle by following and interacting with other users. Think of it like making friends!

3.
Get the Word Out. Include links to your Facebook page in your Etsy profile, your various correspondence with buyers and within your Shop Announcement.

Extra Credit:

• Have 15 minutes before work or during lunch? Join us in the Online Labs this Friday Oct. 25, at 12 PM ET for Bring on the Buyers, a short video workshop and chat with Etsy Admin.
• Read Etsy’s Guide to Facebook.
• Chat with your peers about ways to get found by holiday shoppers in this week's Discussion.

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Message from Laetitia at Etsy Admin re. Boot Camp:

Hello!

Here we are approaching our final week of boot camp! Before we go, we have to talk about packing and postage. This is a huge topic for everyone and great to discuss in your Team to share knowledge of the best available options. Here are a few conversation starters. Feel free to share 1 or 2 questions in your team.

- Imagine you are your buyer! Are you shipping costs appropriate?
- Do you offer free secondary shipping?
- Do you offer free shipping for local buyers to increase local sales?
- How do you manage last minute / express shipping upgrade?
- Calculate the very last date when you will ship an item. When will this be for you? How do you make sure that your customers know about it?
- Does your shipping include tracking and insurance?
- How about teaming up with some team mates and organize a delivery event to get last minute orders directly to your customers like Santa? Get in contact with a local car sharing company and ask for a sponsorship, for example. Other ideas?
- Do you have a special holidays plan for refunds and return?
- Do you have enough packaging materials in stock? You will need more in the end than you might think…
- What’s your plan for a festive packaging? or free gift wrapping service?

We hope you and your Team have a great Christmas season this year. Come find us in the Europe+ Captains Team if you have any questions!

Re: Holiday Boot Camp 2013

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Seven

Holiday Boot Camp

Hi there,

Nothing beats that burst of joy following the cha-ching of a sale! Once you’ve finished that happy dance, it’s time to get down to business packaging and shipping out your holiday orders. Set yourself up for success ahead of the holiday rush by establishing clear expectations for buyers; provide accurate processing times, shipping estimates and great service.

Make it easy for shoppers to buy from you during the busy holiday season. Anticipate common questions shoppers will have. Include item information like materials and dimensions, various holiday options you may offer, such as gift wrap or gift messages, and shipping and processing times. Provide preemptive answers throughout your shop to reduce the need for a lot of back and forth messaging. This not only lessens the load for you, it can also hook buyers who would rather add something to their cart and not bother writing you a convo to get clarification. Win-win!

1. Set processing times. To simplify the decision-making process for shoppers, add processing times to your listings and clearly state the shipping method and speed in your item descriptions and Shop Policies – for example, “Ships via USPS Priority Mail (2–3 business days).”

2. Research shipping rates. To obtain accurate rates, you’ll need to measure and weigh your packages. Keep track of common item weights for future reference, and use your shipping provider’s online shipping calculators to determine shipping prices.

3. Create a shipping plan. Devise a plan to ensure that you’ll keep up with demand and deliver items in a time-sensitive fashion. Consider offering expedited shipping in addition to standard shipping. Research what shipping methods are available near you and determine what special shipping materials and forms you may need to have on hand. Make sure your Shop Announcement includes last-call dates for placing custom orders, as well as shipping deadlines for each of the types of shipping you offer.

4. Wrap it up. To save time, you can purchase labels for all your open orders (domestic and international) at the same time. Your buyers will automatically receive a shipping notification email that includes a tracking number. For international orders, we even generate the customs form for you.

Attend an Online Workshop: Top Buyer Questions

When wrapping up orders, make each package feel like a present that reflects your shop's style. What memorable little touches can you add to delight the recipient and encourage them to return? Read Packaging Inspirations for ideas. Make sure the outer shipping box is durable and appropriate for what you sold. Be sure to feature your branding on the box or envelope, and include a business card and thank-you note.

Holiday Boot Camp: Lesson Eight

Holiday Boot Camp

Hi there,

Congratulations on completing Holiday Boot Camp! Feel free to revisit these lessons and use them as a reference in the future. Now, onto our last (but not least) important lesson...

Any experienced Etsy seller will tell you that when it comes to securing repeat buyers, customer service is key. Establishing friendly shop policies and excellent customer service habits will make for happier transactions, less stress and hopefully, continued sales long after the holiday season.

One of the easiest ways to drum up new traffic and repeat business is by giving buyers an incentive to buy from you. To build up a loyal fan base, let these four customer service tips be your guide:

1. Start on the right foot. Make sure your item descriptions, policies and shipping methods are clear and welcoming to potential buyers.

2. Communication is key. Respond to shoppers questions quickly. Let customers know when their purchase is on the way using Shipping Notifications.

3. Be realistic. Establish expectations for your customers that you can actually meet. For example, set attainable processing times and be clear about order cut-off dates for delivery by the holidays.

4. Foster repeat business. Consider including a handwritten note, small free gift or coupon code as an incentive for buyers to return to your shop. Include a physical copy of the coupon in your shipments — you can use our handy download — and include the code in your follow-up message to your buyers to say thanks. Be sure to stay organized by keeping track of any coupon code you create and distribute.

Coupon Code Worksheet

After you've made your way through this final lesson, take a moment to reflect on all your hard work. We hope this will be your best holiday season yet!
