On May 3-4, Pop Shop Houston returns to Silver Street Studios with a two day festival of handmade design goods, visual art, indie bands, and small bites. Featuring over 90 local vendors, Pop Shop Houston has a blend of fine art and practical goods from local makers. Throughout the weekend, there are outdoor musical performances by The New Mercies, Children of Pop, and Mikey and the Drags. Inside will be a wonderland of design goods, activities, a braid bar, video games, and more.
At the last Pop Shop Houston, over 5,000 shopped and attended. Now heading into the fourth installment of the festival, organizer Brittany Bly expects it to keep growing. “The people who attend Pop Shop Houston love buying handmade goods directly from the person who made them,” she said. “I hope that festivals and markets like ours create business opportunities for our vendors, and help them make a living doing what they love. Buying directly from makers helps you feel good about your purchases.”
In between the big festivals every six months, Pop Shop Houston also hosts monthly “Mini Pops” at Westheimer and Dunlavy in Montrose. “The Mini Pops keep it current,” Bly said. “The market is where we experiment. We get to try out new ideas and meet new people every month.”
Pop Shop Houston is also a co-organizer of Eat, a new farmer’s market launching in April at Onion Creek. “Everything we do, we try to make it come together in the big festival.” Bly said. “We just want everyone to have a good time.”
