To Model or Not to Model??

I need some help. I've had several people tell me that they would like to see my jewelry being modeled by someone. However, the thought of a complete stranger wearing some earrings that I might be buying just grosses me out. What do you think?

I agree with you - but what I think I would do is give the model one pair of silver wires and one pair of gold wires and just switch the earrings to the wires she wears, that way you aren't giving 'worn' ear wires to your buyers...just an idea :)

just looked at your shop, looks like my option isn't doable for your stuff - however, you can always just swab them down with alcohol after the model wears them, that will remove any germs and leave them as good as new.

I've thought about the alcohol thing. IDK.
This is something I have been struggling with lately.

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

I agree with you underthetreedesigns - I would not buy them if I saw them modeled on a person.
If you make the same earrings over and over but in different colors, you could take a picture of one pair and use it for all listings that have same/similar earrings in the different colors and say in the description that the pair on the model is not the pair you would be buying (does that make sense?). Of course that would not work on one of a kind pieces.
I think it's a good idea to show them hanging from something and it looks like most of your listings do have a picture showing that.

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

Yeah - it's a touchy situation - I have gotten several requests to see items on a model so that buyers can gauge the size of the item, since sometimes it is hard to tell, but if you got a mannequin or something, that would suffice.

Hmmm, I might have to look into the mannequin head. Or maybe just tell them that the earrings are sterilized after being modeled.

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

Are your items unique or OOAK? Can you make a set that you model and make another set for purchasing? Maybe having a model wearing just a couple earrings. I know it doesn't sound sanitary, but I do like to see what the earrings look like on someone.

I'll be adding children't earrings to my store in the near future. The children that model them, get to keep them.

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

I wonder if you could somehow get a close up photograph of a model's head, blow it up to life size and mount it on cardboard with a hole to hang the earring on. It seems like it could be done very artistically with a little work. Not that I could do it, but I'm sure someone could.

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

I think I might just stick to props. Thanks for everyones input though. I've never really had an actual customer request to see anything on a model and I don't really have time to try and find someone to model for me. I have a hard enough time just trying to find the time to take the pics anyway.

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

Our sales spiked when we started using models and never tapered off. I switch out the ear wires and clean the cuffs, but given that people are voting with their money so far I'd say model it.

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

To me the idea of being freaked out by them being in someone's ears is ridiculous. They're just touching skin and the skin in your piercing is probably cleaner than the skin on your hands. But - people will continue to be freaked out by it so...

Re: To Model or Not to Model??

Does anyone have good ideas on how to take pics of bracelets on models? I had a few of my wrist but it just looked realyl weird having my wrist in most of the pic and then the bracelet...just curious to see what people think.. :)
