I need your opinion on Noritake dishes

Help please. I am new to team and fairly new to Etsy (opened a shop in Nov 2012)

I have been drawn to a set of Noritake dishes at a local thrift store. I am considering purchases them and selling them on my Etsy store. The price is $100.00 so that's why I hesitate.

The pattern is "Palos Verde" in the Progression line from the 70's.

Pieces in the set include 7-8 dinner plates, cereal bowls, cups/saucers, dessert plates, S/P shaker, gravy bowl, small and large serving bowls, large platter, butter dish, cream/sugar set (about 43-45 pieces)

Has anyone sold Noritake? As a set or by pieces? Should I purchase? Your advise is greatly appreciated.

Re: I need your opinion on Noritake dishes

Buyers know the Noritake name. Sounds like a decent price for a large set depending on their condition but the price could still be a bit lower...

Do you use Replacements for reference? If not, here's the page on this particular set. it's discontinued back in late 70's so it meets that vintage requirement. http://www.replacements.com/webquote/N__PAV.htm

Only thing with a large set is you have to really check it over, wash & then repackage ... lots of work, time and packing materials.

Re: I need your opinion on Noritake dishes

I, too sometimes use replacements.,com as REFERENCE POINT ONLY-

I Usually use COMPLETED SALES on ebay to find REAL prices, though

Buying and reselling china /dinnerware is rather tricky MOSTLY in that postage I equate with gas if you find yourself locally BUT INSURED postage PLUS packing materials can get costly

Thanks for your comments. I might go back to the thrift store and see if the set is still there. If it is, I will ask if they are willing to go down on the price. Maybe then, I will get them. Not sure if I will sell as a set or individual pieces.

Re: I need your opinion on Noritake dishes

Hi nikki, I've been selling dishes for about 20 years (and I am a supplier to Replacements) and it's my experience that not many people purchase entire sets of dishes over the internet. More often, folks are looking for just one or a few pieces to add to their collection.

There are two ways to look at the thrift store price. First, as a retail price: if you were buying the dishes for your own use, then $100. would be a very reasonable price. But, looking at it as a potential reseller, then I would say that $100. is far too high. For the pieces you listed, in decent condition (which means no scratches, no nicks, no utensil marks, no stains), a price of no more than $50. would be more appropriate.

Good luck!

Thanks for the comments and advise. I will pass on the set unless I get it for a lower price. Good to know pieces are better to sell than sets. I am fairly new to selling dishes. I am so drawn to them when I go to a store or sale though. It's a learning experience.

Karen,
You might want to post your question to Maggie on a new thread. You will get suggestions that way.

Re: I need your opinion on Noritake dishes

I sell a bit of china and I suggest lots and lots of bubble wrap. I put tons of layers to send it out. Also I agree, I sell pieces one at a time. No one ever wants sets of things even though its available. I also try to follow a rule of not paying more than a few dollars for an item other wise Im paying for it to arrive.
