solerding question

I am making some necklaces for my store, and I've been using a basic kumihimo technique, but the thread I've been using is thin enough that no matter how tight I close the jump ring with the pendant on it, it winds up falling off the necklace. I've decided that the best solution may be to solder the jump ring closed, but I'm worried that the heat on the jump ring might be enough to burn the thread, and with kumihimo, it's pretty much impossible to put the jump ring and pendant on the necklace until the rest of the necklace is done. anyone have any ideas? is there any way to keep the thread safe while I solder the jump ring? am I being paranoid about the heat issue?

No you are not being paranoid about the heat. It would a tricky job for many jewelry people. There are some jump rings called snapees (i think), they are expensive, but the are designed to snap shut, and stay shut.

Eta: what about wire wrap loop?

You might also do a search for some larger pendant bails that your kumihimo would fit through. I've gotten some really awesome ones here on Etsy!

What are you using to solder the jump ring closed? I use my soldering iron with tiny tip. Also I use hemostats, since they lock, to hold the jumpring. With the hemostat, hold your jumpring, flux the opening on the ring and just lightly tap it. Doesn't take much at all. You could also use painters tape to cover the fiber, until you've soldered the ring closed.

I put my freeform slides on my kumihimo cords before I add the end caps. Why can't you solder the ring closed, slip it over the cord and then finish the cords?

Re: solerding question

A double jump ring is what I use when I'm paranoid about something falling through. It works wonders. Otherwise, sometimes I close up ends with just the tiniest dallop of resin placed on the opening of the jumpring with a toothpick. Though that can pop open if messed around with. The double jump ring would be my main recommendation.
