Which Beading Thread to Use?

I stumbled upon a few pictures of barefoot sandals and I would love to make some. I have all the beads available but I'm stumped at which nylon thread to use. I need something flexible and durable since they will be worn on feet and ankles.

Any suggestions?

Re: Which Beading Thread to Use?

My suggestion would to be to use a nylon coated beading wire that is at least a 49 strands at a thichness of 0.018" and has a rated tensile strength of at least 20lbs. Accu-Flex, Beadalon, and SoftFlex all have wire that meets those standards. Even if the beads are light weight I would usethe largest thickness beading wire the bead's hole can accommodate to counter the extra stress the motion of the foot flexing will cause on the piece. Also you could try a good quality rattail if the bead's holes are large, the flexibility of the fabric should work well with the foot's motion but may stretch out if if the customer gets it wet.

Thank you so much for your advice, jewelrydesignbyME. I'll start searching for some supplies on Etsy :)

Or you could also search for Bead Cord, which is a silk that's used to knot pearls.

You could also use a thick version of Fireline - basically fishing wire that is very strong. p.s. It's cheaper to buy at a sporting goods store than at a bead store.

I agree with jewelrydesigns. That would be your safest bet. Silk cord wouldn't stand up to the wear and tear of footwear, and the fishing line will crink and stretch and stiffen over time.
