Tips for capturing color purple in photographs...

Hi ;)

Any tips on how to capture the color purple when taking photographs? It ALWAYS comes out bluish! I take my pictures outside, without a flash, and try different backgrounds, sides, even inside photos, and after 30-40 pictures, still no purple! ;)

And then when I try to adjust the color in an editor, it turns the whole background pinkish...

Thank you!!

Many times my purple things look brown, too. I saw someone suggest a few days ago on the main forums to put something red in the photo that you can crop out. Not sure if it works or not. I'm getting ready to photograph a purple journal and I'm going to try.

Great suggestion with the red! I have the best sucess outside, on white. If your camera has a setting to set the white point, I would do that, too.

I just adjust the color in my editing program after taking the photo when I have this problem. Pinks & Purples can be a pain for sure.

Sometimes flash can actually help. Try a few shots with & without. I tend to end up w/more blue-hued photos on overcast days. If your photo editing program has an "adjust tint" option, that can be worth experimenting with. Its choice isn't always better than the original photo, but worth a click. And as Elise mentioned, try setting the white balance where/when you're shooting if your camera allows.

Re: Tips for capturing color purple in photographs...

When I'm shooting purple, I'll try putting something red and something blue off to the side (outside of the frame) to 'balance' the colour.

Between that and taking many photos with just slight movement of the camera I can usually get a decent set of pictures.

But if I can't, I'll simply leave it until the next day and try again.

Re: Tips for capturing color purple in photographs...

I tried out the tip for putting a blue, red, yellow and green card in the picture and it seemed to work much better. I just cut some small squares of cardstock in those colors and put them in the corner then cropped them out of the final picture.
Thanks for the tip!

Did you use all 3 colors at the same time?
