Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

Hi!

My first time in this new forum and figured I'd give it a shot...

I sell Bamboo Circular Knitting Needles in my shop and was wondering...

All you knitters out there... which do you prefer to knit with? Circulars or Straights?

Personally, I prefer circulars and that's why I decided to carry these marvelous needles.

I found this manyfacturer many years ago when looking for a 9" length circular needle so I could knit in-the-round and didn't have to use double points. EUREKA!! The rest (as they say) is history!

What's your preference? I'd love to hear!

Hi acacheofjewels: I actually prefer staights & dpn's. I can make my own but I would actually buy
knitting needles made of hardwoods. I am also coveting cassein needles :-)

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

Hello there!

I am into crochet mostly. Just starting knitting recently. I have been having trouble finding very very small knitting needles (for small doll clothes). I have heard that other people use regular needles for it... and I have yet to find a suitable circular needle.

hi acache, nice shop!

I use both kinds but mostly straight. I'd rather use circular needles than dpn just because I need to up my skill level there :)

I really like bamboo or wooden needles lately.

Straights absolutely, I find circulars awkward.

Circulars all the way for me! I knit a lot of socks too but use magic loop for them and even when I'm not knitting in the round I'd much rather use circulars as they just feel more comfortable.

Depends on the project, but circulars are all I use for flat projects.

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

I love circulars. So handy. I can take them anywhere and just knit away in my lap. They are what I use most often because they can hold a prodigious amount of knitting. I will mark your shop.

I've a question for LouiseFelice who said she had a weird way of knitting and can only use straight. Are you of English or Celtic descent? Some of us learned a version of strick which is to hold the left hand needle between the arm and the body and knit away with the right hand. It's mostly used in gansey knitting. If you were taught by someone who was descended from Cornwall, English fishing villages, some parts of Scotland, anywhere around the coast where fishing was done, this might be the problem. These knitters even used a belt attachment to hold that left hand needle and were able to walk around and knit ganseys so fast it was unbelievable. Some continental knitting is also this way. I have a dear Finnish friend who knits this way...faster than lightning.

It's a definite switch to start using circulars, a bit of a struggle, but worth it too. In addition to ganseys, I learned to make fairisle and I love circulars. I was taught by my grandmother who knew how to use many techniques out of necessity.

I also love wood and bamboo needles...and Addi Turbo Lace. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Hell yes!!!

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

I used to travel a lot for work, so got into the habit of always using circular needles...my work stayed in my lap instead of off to the side, and the needles were less intimidating for the person sitting next to me on the plane.

Hmmm...I suppose you can't even take knitting needles on a plane anymore?

My daughter flies often with her needles. For a while they were banned, but TSA ended that some time ago.

Circulars and DPS almost exclusively. I have a pretty exhaustive collection of straights, and don't really use them.

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

I prefer straight, but it depends on what I'm knitting. I probably use straight 60% of the time. I do prefer magic loop method and circular needles to dpn for most applications, if that helps.

Nice shop and great prices on the needles, btw. I hearted you for future reference.

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

For me it depends on the length of the row that I'm knitting. If it's pretty short, regular needles work for me. Long rows definitely call for a circular needle, even tho I'm not joining and knitting in the round.

I love all kinds of needles. They certainly are fun to collect and use!

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

Depends on the project - dpn for socks, mittens and hats, straights for small to medium flat pieces and circulars for blankes, skirts and anything big.

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

Depends upon what I am knitting. I do a lot of hats, which I prefer to do in the round, but it's hard to find circulars under 16 inches that aren't awkward. I would love some 9 inch circulars in lots of sizes (with double points to go with them for the decreases.

I am with MommaE. I also would knit more hats if I could find different size circulars in 9 inches. I also love all of my dbl points too for my socks. Not sure about the socks on circulars-looks interesting...

Re: Straight vs. Circular (Knitting Needles that is...)

I prefer circular needles & knitting in the round. I find it so much easier to put down if I have to do something, pick up again & know what to do next rather than fiddling around.
