I have searched all over etsy and the internet for unique looking stamps that have border designs. I came across a website with stamps I love but they are designed for leather. Some are made out of 1018 steel, some of stainless steel. I want to stamp copper/ silver 24 gauge pieces. Do you know if these stamps would work for this? Does anyone have a website of unique stamps that I could buy? Thanks so much. Here is the website of the stamps I love!!
I'm going to ask Steven to be sure (he was trained as a machinist, so is really good with metals) the 1018 is probably going to work, though maybe not as good on metal as leather.
They are a brand called early craftool, don't know if that helps. I don't need super crisp designs from these stamps, so hoping 1018 is strong enough steel
I don't know the answer to your question but I sure love them for making designs in clay. I have a some of those but I only have used with clay! helpful aren't I? :D
OK, Steven tells me that 1018 steel is a mild cold rolled steel. against silver and copper, it will do perfectly fine, but he says if it's a real detailed stamp, that the stamp may lose some of it's crispness over time.
That is a really cool stamp. I don't if it would work on metal or not. Santa fe Jewelers Supply does have a lot of variety of stamps for metal. You might want to check them out sfjssantafe.com.
I realized I am coming late to this party, but here's what I know: I have a set of leather stamps that was my aunt's from the 70s. I use them all the time with metal and they work great.
I bought some leather stamps hoping to use them on metal as well, but they are brass, and shallow, and don't stamp well. STEEL should be fine on copper and silver.
I always heard that leather stamps were not suitable for metal, I never got a good reason why - maybe too shallow, maybe not hard enough, no idea. Thinking maybe temper them - easy to do and might give you a perfectly fine metal stamping tool.
