Sewing Help

I'm doing a decorative stitch with my sewing machine. But because it's decorative I can't use the reverse function to look the stitch. How do I reinforce the beginning and ending stitches?

Re: Sewing Help

After you've finished your decorative stitching, pull gently on the thread tail from the back of the piece until a loop of the thread from the front pops through. Use a pin to grab that loop and pull the front thread through to the back. Tie the two threads together in a firm knot.

Re: Sewing Help

No problem!

My first sewing machine was so old it didn't go in reverse at all, so I tied a *lot* of little knots.

Re: Sewing Help

I have lifted the foot a bit so the needle stays in the same spot and did a few stitches. Use to have to do that way back when. Dang that was a long time ago now that I think of it. LOL

Re: Sewing Help

Your mileage will (of course) vary, but my machine doesn't care for the "lift presser foot/sew in place" method; I tend to get tangled bobbins and broken threads that way.

Re: Sewing Help

Another option that might work for you is to use fray check on the thread ends. Should hold them in place. But I agree pulling threads to the back and tying them is probably best.

Re: Sewing Help

I was going to say what tsurfer said. I just sew in place for a while. You can switch from the decorative stitch to a straight stitch and just hold the fabric so it doesn't feed through.

Re: Sewing Help

When you reach the edge of the piece, you can always switch from your decorative stitch to a very very fine straight stitch and use that for an overlock.
