I would like to try to oxidize brass and copper wire, my question is, will artistic brass and copper wire work?
Thank you,
Antje

Re: Oxidizing Copper and Brass

No, probably not. Much artistic or craft wire has been coated to resist tarnish or oxidation. Both brass and copper wire are fairly inexpensive, so if you're interested in an antiqued look, you might as well buy untreated wire. Alternatively, you might simply by antiqued or antique-coloured artistic/craft wire.

Re: Oxidizing Copper and Brass

I make oxidized copper wire and buy the raw copper wire from https://contenti.com/wire-wrapping-beading/craft-beading-wire/round-copper-wire

Make coils first, then pour the Jax into a tupperware container. Soak the wire in the Jax solution of your choice for a few minutes.
https://jaxchemical.com (smaller bottles available from Etsy suppliers)

Then rinse in a water bath and leave to dry on newspaper. It's pretty easy.
You need raw copper wire, not coated in any way.

untreated copper can be oxidised. First make sure you degrease it, then soak in warm solution of liver of sulphur until it reaches the colour you need. I would then coat the wire with wax to make the finish last longer.

have fun !

Re: Oxidizing Copper and Brass

There are products you can use to get a verdigras finish on copper as well if that is what you want. Rio Grande sells a lot of different types of finishes for metals.
