Liver of Sulpher colors - Help!

Help!
I've started using liver of sulpher to oxides several of my silver pieces and the color is coming out more gold/brown than gray/black... what can I do to get the gray/black colors?

leave it in longer? I usually use quite warm water to almost hot to mix solution, and warm my piece as well.

Hmmm...I was 'painting' it on (Hot) just to where I wanted it...

I mix the sulpher with Very hot water dip my pieces in and out till I get the color I want

Barbara, you might try heating the piece you're painting and get it good and warm to the touch before you start painting.

Not sure which kind of liver of sulphur you're using, but have you tried shaking/stiring it before you use it. When I changed over liquid to gel I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it wasn't working, until someone mentioned "did you shake it first?" sure enough it worked...

Sometimes I find it's easiest to build up successive layers of liver of sulpher. If I paint on multiple thin layers, it builds up a nice dark colour.

I've also gotten the actual piece really warm too, before I put it in the LOS
