Is there a way to identify wool fabric?

I just acquired a box of vintage fabrics.
One appears to be wool. Is there a way to confirm fabric content?
Cut a strip and see if it shrinks?

Any advise please.

Can you cut a small piece from the wool? If you can, wool will "felt" if you put it in the washer/dryer.

You can also take the piece, add a tiny bit of dish soap, run it under hot water, then cold water. You need to rub the wool while your doing this. It's the combination of the hot water, cold water, and agitation that will cause the fibers to felt. Some felters use only hot water but I think you'll get better results with the hot/cold. If you feel the fibers getting tight/dense - you've got wool.

Does this felting test work only for 100% wool or does it work for wool blends too?
Is there a way to know if it is the one or the other? (100% wool or a blend)

Fiber burn chart. I use it all the time:

I have this link in the extensive vintage research links I've compiled in my blog:

Wool blends will felt as well, but the result won't produce as dense a material as 100% wool.

100% wool will dissolve if soaked in bleach.

Re: Is there a way to identify wool fabric?

Thank you crochet and archivia. Your links and info are very useful.
I deal with blends all the time and find identifying them extremely frustrating and a bit of a hit and miss situation most of the time.
I used the burn test in the past to identify silk, but archivia's burn chart is very detailed and goes far beyond that. Thanks.
