Help putting magnets in felt stuffies?

I want to create some new product lines and wanted to make magnets out of my little felt creations.

Does anyone have advice on where to get strong magnets for a decent price?

Also any advice on how they are best placed inside the stuffies is appreciated, sew it in? hot glue?

What kind of magnets are you looking for? Rare Earth magnets are fairly strong and aren't that expensive.

Have you looked at Etsy supplies?

Re: Help putting magnets in felt stuffies?

I have looked at etsy supplies (I do like to keep it in the family), but since I've never used magnets before I was hoping someone could weigh in on the size and strength of some available online.

It would be nice if they are strong enough to hold up a couple pieces of paper on the fridge/filing cabinet.

Also do you put in INSIDE the felt, or on the outside? Sorry so many questions.

Re: Help putting magnets in felt stuffies?

I buy magnets in bulk at Michael's. They sell in various quantities, sizes and strength. I get a package of 50 that are 3/4-inch diameter ... I don't remember the exact price, but it's something like $8 without a coupon or sale. The downside is the two Michael's stores by me are often out of stock. The only packaging I have on hand says the brand is ProMAG.

They aren't rare earth magnets (or at least aren't labeled as such), but they hold up my dragonflies and several sheets of paper. Everyone I've sold or given them to comments on how strong the magnets are.

I've looked online but haven't found a source with better pricing without having to buy thousands of the darn things at a time, which I'm not currently prepared to do.

I hope that helps! :)

Re: Help putting magnets in felt stuffies?

Oh, and as for inside or outside, I'd recommend experimenting a little. It probably depends on the strength/size of the magnets you buy. Keep in mind that if the magnet is on the inside of the stuffy, they won't be able to hold up as many sheets of paper or whatever. So it may depend on whether you want them to be decorative or useful. (I think it looks better when they're inside, but I'm also a big fan of utility. :)

Re: Help putting magnets in felt stuffies?

I have used the neodymium rare earth magnets. They are very strong and definetely hold several pieces of paper. They are also very economical. You can get 50 for under $20 which includes shipping.

I have never used them on fabric though and I would be conserned they may eventually just rip the fabric.

If I was going to use them on felt I would use them on the outside and I would put a piece of cardboard on the inside of my felt piece. That way the stress of the magnet being pulled on and off a surface would be distributed more evenly.

Of course experimenting is always the best way to go.

Thanks for the wonderful advice! I'll check out Michael's (and print out my coupon of course) as well as the neodymium magnets from heavensentcrafts. Thank you!
