Gluing paper together---need help!

This may sound stupid, but I need to know what the best way/product to glue paper together is. One piece is regular paper, but the other piece is a little slick (a notebook cover.) It is crucial that these papers stay glued together. I'm customizing a notebook for my best friend, but I've never done anything like this before. It is a graduation present, and I'd hate for the front of the cover to fall off. Any help would be much appreciated!

Acrylic gel medium is pretty much the bomb for gluing paper to anything. It's what I use all the time, for many years, and it's never not worked yet.

You can get it from any art supply shop, it comes in a tub and it lasts for ages. Look for matte gel medium - Liquitex do a good one which is reasonably priced. (I'm in the UK so can't really say how much it's going to be stateside.)

Oh, I'm interested in this too - if some of it squishes out, does it stay on the paper? Or can it be peeled off like rubber cement?

No, it's not like rubber cement so if you put too much on you need to clean it up before it dries.
