Crochet pattern help!

I recently received a book of vintage knitting and crochet patterns, I have a pattern that I want to try but I am having trouble with the instructions! Anyone know what this means:

With the Rose Strand Cotton make thick ring. Cover it with 18 sc.

I get the sc (single crochet) part, but what is "make a thick ring"??? Is this my slipknot?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Re: Crochet pattern help!

I'm guessing, but I think it means to wrap thread several times around your finger(s), forming a ring and then work the sc sts over this ring. Definitely not your slip knot.

Re: Crochet pattern help!

do you know the magic ring technique?

this is the same thing essentially, but you have several rings of the yarn before you start working magic ring.

Re: Crochet pattern help!

Earlynn and Steph- I have not heard of the magic ring, but I looked into it and maybe that's what the pattern means! The pattern is from the 1920's and is for a purse, so I think the magic ring technique would make sense-that would be the start of the bottom of the purse.
Should I cast on 18 since I will be "covering it" with 18? I will definitely have to experiment with this!

Thank you!

Re: Crochet pattern help!

Since its a vintage pattern from the 1920's the 'magic ring' technique wasn't used.

If you want to stay true to the pattern they are basically saying 'make a ring from the yarn and using that ring as a base, work 18sc around it to cover the ring.

Usually the ring will be a number of wraps in a circle of the right size.

But using today's technology I would use a double or treble strand of yarn and use the magic ring technique.

Re: Crochet pattern help!

thank you crochetgal, I had never used the magic ring technique, but I am glad to have learned it (thank you internet and step by step pictures).
I was going to try a couple of things and see how they panned out.
