Crimp Ends With Link Chains

I use very fine (1mm) sterling silver link chain in many of my designs. I had been finishing these necklaces with jumprings attached to clasps. It works well enough, but I was thinking about using crimp ends (with a closed loop) instead. I use these crimps with my beading chain but was wondering if using crimps would be as secure with link chain (as opposed to beading chain). I like the neat finished look and it seems as though it might be more secure than a jumpring. Your thoughts on this are much appreciated.

Re: Crimp Ends With Link Chains

I've seen tubes with loops (and cap ends w/ loop) on box, snake, caprice, omega, and serpentine chain soldered or fused in it, but never just crimped on. Those chain styles are all pretty soild like beading wire and have surface area that fills the ID opening of the terminator very closely. I don't know how well just crimping a chain link style chain in will hold since there is much less surface area for the crimp to compress on to when folded. My advice is to try it out on a lesser material like silver plate or aluminum that is the same style as the sterling chain you plan on using.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I am unsure how well it will grip in the long run. Thanks for your suggestion.

Re: Crimp Ends With Link Chains

I've used the tube style crimps with loops on a very thin snake style chain. I put a tiny dab of super glue on the end of the chain before I crimped it, which doesn't show. I've been wearing this chain a lot myself and it's very secure.

Yes, I've done it and it works very well. If you're worrying about it holding, just add a dab of glue before you close the crimp.
