Button Shank Removal

How do I remove the shank (metal or glass) from an old button without breaking the button? Thanks!

metal snips..they make many different sizes and they're available at the hardware store.
Glass...I don't know.

I've actually used metal snips on the metal and the glass buttons. I just cut through the glass with the snips and sometimes use a glass grinder to grind down the rough part. I suppose there is a danger that you could break a thin or delicate glass button, but - believe it or not - I haven't had one break yet.
