I started a discussion about this issue back in May 2024, and since then, the problem has persisted. In the past 10 days, I received 10 orders in my shop. Out of those, two were confirmed directly, while the other eight were in the payment processing stage. Of those eight orders, only one was confirmed, and Etsy canceled the remaining seven.
When I reached out to Etsy customer service, they informed me that Etsy cancels transactions when they suspect fraud. However, there is a technical glitch affecting payment acceptance for Etsy Payments.
This issue began after I enrolled in Etsy Payments. Before that, I was using PayPal to accept payments and never encountered any problems like this.
Am I the only one facing this issue, or are there other sellers experiencing the same problems?
I had 1 cancel after 24 hrs of being in processing last week or the week before, looks like the user account was also removed. So suspect there may have been something dodgy, looking at the order address it did raise red flags.
In the past on my other shop, there were probably no more than 5 out of 230 sales which went into processing, but they all cleared within the hour.
It's pretty common to have this happen with higher priced jewelry. Etsy's payment processors seem to do a pretty good job with catching fraud. I had two sales recently that were cancelled after scrutiny by Etsy, and honestly they were obviously sketchy so I would have cancelled them myself. It happens once in a while in my shop.
@Twoyoungz: Every payment processor has their own standards and algorithms.
In very simple terms, there are two points where an order may be 'cancelled'. The first is before the order is even accepted - usually an invalid card number or expiration date, insufficient funds, bad security code, etc. You could be having hundreds of those every day and would not even know it. The second is after the order has been accepted but has not yet been fully approved by the payment processor - generally flagged by the payment processor's fraud detection algorithm and showing to you as 'pending'.
However, even an approved transaction can be reversed. For example the card holder may have reported an unauthorized transaction.
This is something that a merchant can and does experience anywhere, even on your own site with your own payment processor.
The payment processors have all sorts of means to check credit cards and they do so as quick as they can. Sometimes there is a delay. Anything suspicious they will cancel.
It is not an error or problem. Higher end jewelry will attract anyone trying to use a card fraudulently. It might have worked on lower cost items only to have the buyer alerted that their card has been stolen.
Be thankful that the payment processors are attentive. If the buyer really wants the item they can use another card or they can check with their bank as Etsy invites them to. Sometimes buyers find out their card has a limit internationally.
And please do add your location. It is required by Etsy.
