Got dinged for not answering a "thank you" for ordering from an etsy buyer. I had 100% all along for answering my messages quickly. Never in a millions years did I think I had to answer this kind of message....
So, thank you to the Etsy seller that had to thank me for my order. Sorry, but I consider this kind of message SPAM. Guess I should have marked it as such.
I think you still can.
Yes, you can.
There have been many threads about this. Every FIRST message you receive in a thread, must be answered within 24 hours or sent to spam.
Doesn't seem to be any exceptions..............
I'm happy you made a sale! When I get an order (these days slim), the first thing I do on the order page is "contact" buyer and tell them thank you for the order from my shop. Easy to do from the order page on "contact buyer" ...just takes a second. I think you can even set up an auto reply that may prevent dings. No way an expert here, but hope this helps.
@CartersJewels In this case, the OP is the buyer and received a ''thank you for your order'' message. Since those kinds of messages are dinging the seller/buyers, maybe they should be reconsidered when the buyer also has a shop.

This is exactly what the OP is talking about. She received a thank you message from a shop she ordered from. She was dinged on Star Seller because she didn't respond. Sellers should rethink sending thank you messages to buyers who also have shops. I've read enough complaints on the forums and the Star Seller information that's provided to us so I know to respond or mark as spam, but unfortunately not every seller is doing that.
All of this information is available to you on your star seller dashboard. It's been there for months. It's on you to know how the system works. Don't blame the seller for sending you a thank you message.
Can't help but agree. Since day 1 I've sent thank you messages to all my buyers, Etsy shop or not. And when I in turn purchase from other shops, I'm happy to get a thank you message. It's another reminder that you're dealing with real people and making a real difference in their life by buying on Etsy
Etsy and forum responders have told us over and over and over, the first message in EVERY thread whether as a buyer or seller has to be answered within 24 hours. Maybe you can still send the message to spam and it may fix your problem.
Just another case of easy come, easy go and has nothing to do with quality.
yes, star seller is absolute crap. such a primitive caveman thought process the way star seller is run and calculated with no regard to the real world. IT TAKES MORE WORK to care about the star seller program and strive to appease the faulty formula calculations, than it does to run your business "well" and "effectively with top notch customer service." the star seller program does not consider your efforts to provide service to your buyers. it considers computer logic rigidly and solely, ones and zeros. we might as well be back in the mid 90's in regards to running a website and measuring things. therefore, star seller is a dead program to me.
In the time it takes to post about a thank you from a seller, you can message back "you are welcome" to the seller. Courtesy works both ways. I am always happy to hear from a seller or buyer on Etsy.
Exactly! I can't imagine not responding to a message - like it's not important!
We have been told from day one that the system cannot "read" messages - just knows that they are out there - and that we need to answer them all.
TinLizzi is right - take time to be courteous.
@TinLizziAntiques @mommawhazelsquilts
Exactly. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, we don't think anything of sticking our noses in phones all day (thumbs going a hundred miles a minute, responding to texts when someone's had a bad hair day and the like). But courtesy from a Seller is "spam".
(I'm not on social media; personal preference. But practically everyone I know is. And I can't tell you how often phones "ding' . And people don't even look up from them to have a conversation with another HUMAN. It doesn't matter where you go, you see it.
You can still mark it as spam. I had two thank you messages from sellers from March (before I opened my shop but were still counting against me) that I only recently marked as spam and the Star seller stat readjusted after two days.
Spam the message now and in a couple days things should reset/update.
You have to either answer once or mark as Spam on ALL messages. It tells you that right on your Dashboard.
I find it sad that a Thank You for you Order Message from a Seller is considered Spam. Really? Spam is the daily cr-p I get in my email from the same companies. Spam is the "Buy my whatever" Message. But a Thank You for your Order? But that is true; go ahead and mark it such and your score will go up.
As @CartersJewels stated above, I too send a Thank You Message to my Customers with info about their order (how much of a Partial Shipping Refund they will receive; which items will be shipped together; when I will take the pkg. to the Post Off.; and that I will closely monitor their Tracking. Should they need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact me). A Buyer only (that I know of anyway), will reply "Thank You". So easy. And this was BEFORE the Star Seller Program came into play.
Customers often express their appreciation re: Communication. I don't expect a pat on the back for it. But I track every single Order (which can be a pain in some cases. When they don't move from a sorting facility and I have to take measures and contact the Managers or USPS, filling out the "Where is my pkg. Form". BTW, I get a survey for every bloody contact.
I let my Customers know what I'm doing on my end, to get their pkg. moving to them. Some Customers will say it's going above and beyond (to me, I'm doing my job. I'm not saying everyone should do this or it's the best way. Everyone has their own way; that is mine). But Customers reply with a simple "Thank You." People think nothing of living on social media and writing "thx" and so forth. But I would NEVER consider a Thank You from a Seller SPAM.
So I guess when a pkg. takes a rest at a sorting facility or goes the scenic route, there is no reason for that Seller to let you know what steps they are taking to get your pkg. to you. (Because it's "Spam").
Also, did you know if another Seller Messages you, "Hey, how's it going"? That works the same way (because you are not the Initiator of the Message, you're supposed to respond to the first Message (I've had this happen a few times). Or a Buyer may Message you in multiple strings (I've had this happen as well). Before I would answer both Messages in the last string (address them together). NOW I answer the first one, then say "Heading on over to address your other Message."
We all have different opinions. So you know how to get your score back up by marking that Seller's Message as spam. What truly guts me, I cannot conceive of the notion that a Thank You from a Seller would even be CONSIDERED as Spam. And you know; next time that person may be a Seller who is tracking your package, making phone calls, filling out forms and the like. They could very well scrap it and not worry when the pkg. sits in a sorting facility (because it's "spam") if they let you know what is taking so long.
As I stated before, it's incredible that a Buyer "only" will respond "Thank You" or "Thanks, appreciate it"....BEFORE this Star Seller Program came out.
My mini novel is finished. This sort of thing rubs me the wrong way. And all because of the Metrics. I would take TWO seconds to write that Seller back and say Thank You (never considering such a courtesy "spam").
This is exactly the same way I do business and did so even before the star seller badge. I agree with everything you said.
Sometimes I am overwhelmed with orders and it takes my entire 2 week processing time to get them made--other times when things are slow I can have them out in a couple of days. I think buyers need an idea of where they stand in line .
Now that we have the star seller thing I do not plan to nor have I done anything different than always. I don't base my customer service on "the badge".
If this is considered spam and not simply customer service --- no one is forced to purchase.
Well stated.
I only do one thing differently since the SS Program started. I answer Messages quickly (unless I'm out; then I respond later the same day).
But it's in regard to the "strings of". Messages. Or back to back Messages. Before, I would address everything on the last Message. But now I know we must respond to the first Message of ALL strings, whenever anyone who is NOT me Initiates that Message.
I've had Etsy friends (other Sellers) Message me (not lately though; they do it through a Forum DM). But with their Messages, it works the same way (I would be dinged if I didn't Reply to the first one).
I only Marked one person's Message as Spam last Fall. I have no idea who it was (they were not a Seller). But never would I fathom a Thank You Message from a Seller as being "spam".
"But never would I fathom a Thank You Message from a Seller as being "spam"."
Neither would I--neither would I.
Don't think you can't get thanked to death on Etsy?
Seller sends out your package and they thank you with your order as part of your order message.
Then the seller sends a thank you message to let you know your package is on its way.
Then Etsy sends you a woo hoo message that your package is on its way.
Oh, then comes the ding dong message from Etsy, yay your package is here yay!
Then you're invited multiple time to leave a review by Etsy because, gee, it seems just the right thing to do.
You finally leave a review and guess what?
Now comes another thank you message from the seller.
By this time all the love and caring and fuzzy feelings lead to a sense of dread and exasperation.
Jaded? Honestly not so much.
For this reason I stopped sending a thank you for an order unless I've been in communication already or need information for custom work. That is different.
At one time I felt it was appropriate - before Etsy stepped in with all their extra messaging - but I think now the over-communication can be a detriment. Perhaps not for all buyers, but we never know who will be exasperated by it. Things change and I try to change what I do in response.
@Former_Member.. adding "thank you" gift tissue and "thank you" stickers.
