Stupid Question. What are the exact dimensions for listings?

Hello,  I can't find the exact dimensions for a listing.  Guess I got lucky before.  I found some dimensions, but they are wrong.  It seems they are squares when looking at listings within a shop, but rectangles when browsing  listings from multiple shops.  What dimensions do you use?

Thanks.  I did read about photos for listings.  Looking at the Etsy homepage, some images are squares, some are rectangles in landscape mode, and others are in portrait mode.  I just kept redoing my image until nothing got cut off regardless of the dimensions.

There is no one answer. With Etsy being viewed on so many devices the page formatting changes to fit the screen it's viewed on. It's dynamic formatting. The same images could crop square on some devices and rectangular on others. And certain page types format differently as well (shop page, listing page, search results page, etc). It does make it challenging to create images that will look good in all formats!

I stage and crop with an 8x10 landscape orientation in mind.  This seems to serve my images well all over Etsy and on the many devices used by buyers.  I keep in mind that the sides will be shaved off in some views, so I don't stage photos that rely on perfect edges.

Crop photos to 5:4 ratio, but keep product within a center square area. Should work for everywhere. I generally try for a 2000 x 1600 or 2500 x 2000 pixel image, but some are smaller, though with the same ratio.

Is that 2000 wide, 1600 high or the opposite?

This gives you the 5:4 ratio (for every 5 wide, you have 4 high, like 10 x 8 inches)

Also, they still recommend 72 dpi. That seems really low resolution to me.

This will work fine. Higher DPI is only important if you’re printing. (And 72 is something of a myth, anyway.)

I do square - usually around 2600px but do not go below 2000px, Etsy is prioritizing quality now. When I shoot, I make sure the top and bottom parts of the square frame are 'empty' (only contain my background) so that in those places where it's still rectangular, I'll still be fine (they crop top/bottom). It's a tricky situation for long things (looking at you, maxi dresses) so I've been putting those off LOL Glad I chose to focus on home decor...
