I’m not convinced that the Etsy method of working out whether you get Star status is right or fair.
if you get a message from a customer and reply it, then they send you another message, even just a ‘thanks’ , then that is counted separately and you are penalised even if the original message trail is answered again.
also with the post time measurement, if someone ordered 2 items at once but on separate orders, then you would send both items together and therefore only buy one lot of postage, the second item still shows as not posted for Star Seller purposes, ad you are penalised because of that.
I have now lost Star Seller for 2 months because of these instances, even though on both cases the customer got their message wellies on plenty time and were happy, and the other customer got both their items posted AND Saved on postage so was well happy.

Messages should be combined into one thread by Etsy. If you find that they are not, then yes, you need to answer each one.

You need to add the same tracking number to the other orders.
Wellies? Did I type that? Apologies!

What were the wellies supposed to be? : )
I like the sound of message wellies. I think they’d be a great idea for wading through the incomprehensible waffle Etsy sends out.
@TheScottishPenster: Have you looked at the CSV file? It will show which threads had their first message within the three month period and when you replied to that message.
The Star Seller metric is that the FIRST message of a NEW thread must be replied to within 24 hours. It does not matter who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else. If it is SPAM then it should be marked as such. Those have always been the rules. Subsequent messages from the same account (a buyer may have multiple accounts) are supposed to be combined into a single thread. Etsy is now putting a blue text warning / advisory on those messages they consider to be a "new message" but should semantically be called a "new thread".
Help Requests always start a new thread.
If you are creating a custom listing based on a new thread, you still need to reply to the message.
Cancellation requests in a new thread must be replied to in the actual message - replies using the cancellation form do not count as a response.
At least for the time being, it appears that marking an unanswered message as SPAM (even after the 24 hour deadline has passed) will cause your reply percentage to change in a day or two if the original message was within the current star seller period. Note that subsequent messages from that account may go directly to the SPAM folder.
