I received a message from a purchase I made that is unrelated to my shop. The seller reached out with a generic "We received your order" message that I did not reply to. Again, this was not related to my own shop, just a personal purchase I made. I did not reply within 24 hours and as such I am not eligible for Star Seller. I don't feel my lack of response on a personal purchase from a different seller should affect my own shop's Star Seller eligibility?!
Etsy doesn't read your messages to determine the content. EVERY INITIAL MESSAGE COUNTS. Read the message rules on your Star Seller dashboard.
If a seller sends you a message about an order, it shows in your Etsy messages. I don't understand where else you think it would be. We all have only one Message account.
How would the automated program know the difference?
That's a great question. I'm actually pretty baffled by the whole thing as I don't recall prior messages from my personal purchases showing in my Shop Manager messages? They have gone to my user account directly, IIRC?
Unless you have set up more than one account, your messages as a buyer and seller will go to the same message folder. There aren't separate folders for personal and business messages.
You can create another Etsy account just for purchases, if you'd like.
Your shop is connected to this account, so it‘s not a personal account anymore. It’s your seller account.
Go to your Star Seller page and scroll down to the Q&A section.

Questions? We’ve got answers. -> Messages -> What messages count towards the message response rate?
Your message response rate is based on just the first message in a conversation, not ongoing conversations. This means you just need to respond to the first message within 24 hours. This applies to messages both from buyer and seller accounts. Messages from Etsy staff do not count toward your response rate, and neither do messages that you mark as spam. You can also now find a breakdown of your message response rate score by downloading a CSV.
I suppose it's possible the shop that I purchased from went to my shop and sent me a message from there instead of just sending message from their own Shop Manager order list, which isn't ideal, but could be an honest mistake.
The shop that you purchased from COULD NOT go to your shop and send you a message from there - ONLY YOU can send a message from your shop
Not Possible - unless they have access to your Login for your shop

Star seller program information explains this. You have to answer all new messages or spam them. No exceptions. You are seen as both buyer and seller. Etsy is not going to spend time deciding if a message is as abuyer or seller.
Thanks for the clarification, everyone. Issue resolved.
It tells you right on the Star Seller page that you must answer EVERY message at least once in the first 24 hours, or else mark it as Spam.
Someone new posts this every day.
If someone sends you a message about an order you made, just respond "Thank you." If they write a 2nd time to say "You're welcome," you do not have to respond to the 2nd message in the same thread.
