Basically, Etsy messages can't detect duplicate messages from the same seller sent at the same time.
I have been penalised this month for not responding within 24hrs as a few customers have sent messages that were duplicated 2-3 times. I think it's ridiculous to have to respond to each duplicate message just to keep this badge.
Fix your broken messages platform.
I quite agree! Thank you for letting us know .
It has always worked this way, since the program started almost a year ago. The system is automated, the computer program simply takes the time and date the message was received and compares it to the time and date responded to. It is up to us to ensure we action every new message, regardless of whether it comes from a buyer, a fellow seller, or any other source. You have four options.
1. Set autoreply to respond to all new messages to let buyers now when to expect a direct response. You can only set this for up to five days at a time, then you need to reset it.
2. Create a snippet for duplicate messages along the lines of "answered in previous thread". It takes only three clicks to open the snippet list, select the right snippet and send the reply.
3. Mark messages related to purchases as spam. Or better still use a buyer only ID for purchasing instead of your selling ID.
4. Answer every new message you receive, that is what is required for the program. Etsy even prompts us with a blue warning on new messages that they need a response.
Of all the requirements for Star Seller, this last one is the one we can completely control. It's a do it yourself thing. Etsy is not going to do it for you, nor will they change their decisions because of what is basically your mistake.
One only finds out the hard way, in my case three months later, that not answering one duplicate message would have such an effect. I've tried appealing but there is no appeal that I can find. In fact, what the system did was round up the number of missed messages rather than rounding down. If it was the latter, I'd have met the target.

Questions? We’ve got answers. -> Messages -> What happens if I’m getting messages from the same user through multiple message threads?
If messages are appearing in separate threads in your inbox, then as it stands today you’ll need to respond to the initial message of each thread. One idea to help mitigate this in the interim is to set up an auto-reply or to create a Saved Reply for multiple messages from the same user that don’t need individual responses.
@Ohjessicajessica Etsy has actually made it "easier" to fulfil the "Messaging" SSP Metric by combining messages into one Thread. They also give new "Thread" Messages a "BLUE" notification highlighted notation on the Messages requiring a response.i
reply to each new message thread, that's the way it works, it has always worked this way, and I doubt it will ever change
if etsy can link the threads , they will, but if they are not linked, you have to reply to them.
if they contact you through "purchases and reviews" it won't be linked to any other message thread, because that is very important, you have to reply, and fix that, as that's the start of the 48 hours before they open a case.... and they are very likely to get automatically refunded from you, if you haven't at least replied
For some, now, "purchases and reviews" are being called "orders" on our dashboards.
Just a heads up for those that may be confused (as I was since, to me, orders are what I send out as a seller).
I have them separated, but they don't say "orders", I have
purchases
and
review your purchases
They are testing a variety of ways this is being shown.
I have Orders (next to a clipboard) and Review Your Purchases.
Prior, it was all in one place. But ever since the orange circle with the reviews I "must" leave showed up, it's changed.
next to the clipboard,
I have "purchases"
underneath, next to the star
I have "review your purchases". (with an orange star for me to review one)
I have tried changing from English to American, but it's still the same
(my "orders and delivery", change to "orders and shipping" when I change to American, so I thought it might be something like that, but it's not)
I have answered every message fast and within the 24 hours required by etsy this tim period and we too have experienced it happened in our shop too... totally unfair to be judged wrongly because of a glitch at etsy and to have our percentage drop below star status requirements..... please fix this so our shop is not jeopardized again because of something that we had no control of. Thanks for your quick response to our concerns.
if you download the CSV file, you will be able to see which ones etsy thinks you missed,
they could be multiple message threads from he same person, and you only replied o one
@LooseChipsWoodWork : This is a seller peer to peer forum, not a way to contact Etsy, if that is your hope (although Etsy does sometimes post here).
