I made a sale for a custom quilt; off-site marketing was charged as well as a coupon code from my store, for an abandoned cart. As no emails had been sent for that coupon code, I asked Etsy support. They explained that anyone who had that code in all perpetuity, as well as anyone who could find it online, could use it. That made sense and so, in a bit of a panic, I deleted the three discount codes I had for my shop. I then undertook a search for coupon codes for my shop on the web, using several browsers, with no luck finding anything. (My shop is small, I haven't been working on it for ages as I have been doing in-person shows, and my last sale through Etsy was months ago.)
Now very curious, I asked my customer where she had found the coupon code (She is obviously not a previous customer of mine). She replied that it had just shown up in her cart, and she assumed Etsy or I had put it there. She offered to cancel the sale and go through a different payment system - this was nice of her but would be fraud on my part, so I said I would deal with Etsy. And so there is no explanation as to how that code ended up in her cart (she could be lying, but why ever would she?) Has anyone ever had anything similar happen to them?
