Scams messages

Jump to solution

Hi everyone,

I keep getting messages to verify my bank account, my Etsy account and processing payment…

Does Etsy sends messages once you sell an item with instructions?!

Hello,

Etsy is actively engaged in preventing scammers from targeting our community members. If you receive a suspicious message, please proceed with caution. Etsy Support will never ask you to provide personal information via Etsy Messages, such as your email address or password. Any legitimate message from us will show in your "From Etsy" folder.

If you receive a suspicious message, here’s how to report it:

  1. Sign in to Etsy.com and go to Your Account.
  2. Go to Messages
  3. Select the suspicious message from your inbox.
  4. Choose Mark as Spam.

You’ll find examples of common scammer techniques and phishing messages here in our Help Center. Read our Account Security Checklist in the Seller Handbook for more steps you can take to protect your account.

This thread will now be closed, thanks!

If you search the forums you will find hundreds of threads about this in just the last month. It isn’t from Etsy and they are closing the accounts as quickly as they can. From what I have read Etsy has tried a few different ways to warn sellers about this but for some reason many either don’t read it or they just glance over it. Never reply to an email or message with your email, bank account information, credit or debit card information, or how much you have in your bank account.

Those are scams - you are correct. To know for sure, whenever you get a message that says it is from Etsy, go to your Shop Manager>Messages using a browser, not the app, and check under Messages where there is a list of links starting with Inbox and Order Help Requests. Under those is a link that says 'From Etsy'. Click it and check if the message is there. If it is not, it is a scam. Anyone can send a message to your inbox, but only Etsy can send one to the 'From Etsy' section.

No, when you make a sale, it will show up on your dashboard under "Orders & Shipping". The payment all happens behind the scenes and you don't have to do anything to verify or certify or link anything.

However, for many new sellers, a first sale does trigger a verification process, but it will be on your dashboard—not in a message! And they won't ask for your balance, or your banking or credit card information.

@UNUMCLAY: "... it was in the Shop manager> messages ..." But were the Messages in the "From Etsy" section on your Messages page when checking using a browser?

Thank you - I appreciate the links.

Within an hour of opening my account, I received 7 or 8 emails which I now realise were not from Etsy!  It was in "Shop Manager" so I assumed they were all from Etsy...  wow these a***holes work fast...  and I didn't realise they were setting me up.  I'm a complete newbie (opened for 24 hours ago) and the setup was also a bit of a process, but I got there in the end.

The following day, (Today) I received a message from a "potential first buyer".  The message above said that I was on a temporary block and I needed to verify my bank details.  Keen to make my first sale, cooking dinner, helping with homework, etc, I followed the instructions... and got caught out!

Out of the 18 inboxes messages I have received, EVERY SINGLE ONE of them is a scam of some sort...  Am I just unlucky?  Or does everyone have to work out everyday which one is a scam and which one is not?

@UNUMCLAY: It is not just you. Unfortunately new shops (and particularly incomplete ones - no about, policies, etc) are prime targets for the scammers.
