Hi,
twice now I have had orders for my paintings canceled with the message
"Refund reason
Unauthorized Purchase
Message to buyer:
This order was canceled and refunded as we detected that it may not have been authorized by you. These measures are in place to protect you, other members, and the integrity of our marketplace."
The first buyer was told just to reorder the item which he tried to do three times and each time it was canceled again. In the end I just told him to buy the painting from me directly which he did. I'm pretty sure this is an AI problem but it is really bad for business. If I were that buyer I would certainly not be returning to my shop any time soon. It is hard enough to make sales and when they get canceled for no apparent reason it is really a blow, especially for a small shop selling handmade items. I did speak to customer support and was told an email would be sent with instructions (which I have already read and were not at all helpful.) If anyone else is having this problem please let me know so that at the very least we can commiserate!

that is the reason it was cancelled.
and it is a good reason.
etsy can see all kinds of things that we cannot.
and just know that if the sale goes bad now.
etsy cannot help you since the sale was not here.
and be careful with the fee avoidance policy.
@HummingbearStudio: Payment processing can fail for a number of reasons - the obvious stolen card, expired card, bad address, over limit, etc, but payment processors also do a fraud assessment that could have caused it. Unfortunately false positives are not uncommon in the industry.
On Amazon I regularly have sales that are pending for hours, and sometimes never go through. I'm just happy that someone is checking to ensure that the payments clear before I have to make the order. No point working if I'm not getting paid
It's for your protection. What part of "unauthorized" is unclear?
And it's not etsy; it's the payment processor.
Sales were canceled for a very good reason. Unauthorized. The payment processor is protecting you and Etsy.
Yes, Etsy invites the buyer to use a different payment method.
And sometimes this is the first inkling buyers get that their cards have been compromised.
Etsy is protecting you by hiring good paymen processors.
A person's order was canceled three times, and you had them buy from you "directly " ?? How did that work out for you?
Etsy has fairly high security measures on credit card transactions. This is for your protection, and theirs. Any security measures will sometimes flag on someone who isn't doing anything wrong. I've had my own credit card company flag my very real charges. But for the most part, that security protects me from someone else illegally using my card.
The occasion oops is better than losing hundreds of dollars when someone uses a stolen card.
