Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

This is a request/suggestion to change the way we are able to rearrange items in our shops. Who is with me?

I like to organize items in my vintage shop by categories and color line by line. It has always been hard to rearrange items on etsy but it seems to have gotten even more difficult. When you are moving items from page to page, if you are on the last page you can no longer click back to the 1st page without exiting edit mode. I would also love to highlight say 8 items and move them to the back page after a holiday has ended etc.

I personally find visual merchandising important. I send people to my shop that are going to my homepage not just from a searched item. I want my shop to be easy to shop and visually appealing.

If anyone has tips and tricks, I would be most appreciative. And Etsy admin if you could look into ways of improving this for your sellers, that would be amazing!

Thanks,

Megan

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

Etsy doesn't make things like this easy, unfortunately.  I don't even try to rearrange my shop, as few people enter a shop on the main page.

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

I have not tried to rearrange my shop in years. I just let things pop to the top whenI renew or they sell, or I add something new.

Reason: Since Etsy began hiding the fact that there are individual shops here and not just one big "place to shop" I do not think people ever see the "front" page of one's shop. They click on a listing and if they like they will buy or favorite or put in their cart. Then they go on with their search--never actually entering our shop front at all.  I either do other work on my shop or other things I need to do--like fix dinner, with the time I save.

Betreff: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

@MeganLeoneVintage I would love a fully functional sorting method. Right now i have to spent days after a holiday just to move things to the back. And in the end it doesn’t even matter because even though, in the option menu, Etsy gives us a choice to have the customer view our shops according to our sorting, it doesn’t happen in real life unless a customer chooses the ‚custom‘ sorting over the ‚relevance‘ sorting that Etsy has as a default.

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

I would not worry about ‘moving things to the back’, because Etsy brings things from ‘the back’ right up to the front again when they get to their four month renewal or are ready to expire, I often find I sell things in clusters from the very back of my listings as they are actually being shown to customers first.
Sections are by far the best way to keep things in the order you want them, if colour is important then you can have a separate section for black belts say, when the customer clicks on that it will show them all. The best change I have made recently as an experiment was to create a ‘new in’ section, I have found it by far the best way to separate out my new stock from the older stock and I am definitely getting more sales in that section as my customers want to see my fresh stock first. Mine is a little random as I have quite an enormous pile to work through, but I could target it- for instance my ‘new in’ could be all in one line. I keep 30-50 items in it and move things back into their regular sections after around three weeks. So for instance this keeps them at the top of my most recent listings, so if I only listed pink flower postcards and wanted those to appear together first I’d just bulk list those as ‘new in’, then move them to regular sections rather than ‘the back’. ( you can do this in quick edit)
Holiday items such as Easter and Christmas naturally drop back in Etsy search anyway.
When I am buying on Etsy I have different criteria so I may click on a shop and look at most recent first, or even highest/lowest price, so it doesn’t make any difference what you do in terms of merchandising, Etsy can completely override it.
As a bit of background I did used to be the buyer/ merchandiser/ window dresser for four of my dad’s shops, so I do get it! I also want my shop to look good, however more than that I want things to sell, and am aware that this is the internet not a b&m store so it’s much more ad hoc and chaotic and I stopped worrying about it.

Etsy does not change the order of the items in your shop.  When an item is renewed or renewed sold it is placed in the exact same spot it was in before it was renewed or sold.  Shoppers can, however, chose to sort your items by custom, most recent, etc.

When I sell an item or renew an item it goes back to the first page in the #1 postion--upper left, first picture.

I think back when Etsy first started the "rearranging" thing for shops you had a choice of  the 2 different options.

I know I tried the "rearrange" option for awhile and it was taking way to much of my time--and my items did go back to their "old" position. I went in and changed my setting back to the origianl setting.

Perhaps  yours is set for "rearranging" and mine is not?

It is because mine is set to custom and yours is set to most recent.  However if you were one of those that arranges their shop all of the time you would have to have it set to custom or it wouldn't stay arranged.

I very seldom arrange my shop, but I don't want it to change daily either, which it would if I had it set to most recent.

@NoFrogsAllowed

Thanks, I could not remember what Etsy called those options.

Maybe the OP does not realize there are already options?

Personally I just don't want to mess with all the rearranging because I don't think buyers even see or notice our shop fronts anymore.

I love your new in section idea, that is a great way to organize the new items. Thank you so much for sharing!

OMG I am so with you here.  I hate this new change.  I am also reorganizing frequently to place items where they belong.  I have 36 pages of vintage goodies here - it is so time consuming to rearrange!  I find organizing items in groups of like items keeps viewers in the shop longer so it is imperative to do so.  Fingers crossed Etsy reads this post and grants your wish!

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

The advice used to be that rearranging your front page often mattered for SEO - but I don't know if that's true anymore.

That's a new one.  Never heard that remark from anyone that it mattered for SEO.  Never in my 10+ years on Etsy.

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

How the front page look doesn't matter to most buyers because they don't visit the shop home page.  Most just purchase and go.

When I visit home pages, I really am not interested in like things next to like or color schemes.  In fact color schemes can throw me off so much that I have actually left the shop.

@ButterflyFeetDigital  the way your items are arranged has nothing at all to do with SEO.

Hmmm. What I seem to remember is Etsy staff telling us to rearrange the front page because google looked for fresh content.

@ButterflyFeetDigital  Making new listings is fresh content not just moving around what you already have listed.

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

rearrange shop... what a waste of time imo.

I haven't done that since waaaaay back.

A buyer usually enters your shop from a search. If they click on your shop name from that listing, it will show them your shop front laid out with relevant items related to that previous listing and not the shop the way a seller has laid it out. Only if the buyer clicks on a different 'sort' will they potentially see the way a seller has laid out a shop.

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

@NoFrogsAllowed  my items are OOAK so they do expire without selling, new listings go down in search, and older Etsy listings do come back to the top of search. There really is no point rearranging anything.

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

@NoFrogsAllowed You can’t ‘set’ your shop to custom or most recent, as the customer can just click to change that themselves if they want, and I think most customers want to see most recent and probably don’t care if it’s custom or not. The way you want your shop to look is only known to you, the customer can’t possibly discern that, and surely you want them to see all your stock not just a carefully curated collection.

I misunderstood your post.  The OP was about rearranging and by the time I realized you were referring to search it was too late to edit my comment.

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

I’m with you! I also spend time rearranging my shop. I have repeat customers who browse through the whole “place” (so to speak). Etsy’s rearrange functionality was, like other features, more robust years ago but it’s now limited. Don’t let that stop you from spending time working on current listings in various ways. In a physical shop, moving and rearranging is key to success. I find that when I move things around in my online shop, especially bringing buried yet “sleeper” items up to the first few pages, it does help. And yes, I’d love for Etsy to make it easier for people like us!

Re: Rearranging Items in Shop - Visual Merchandising

I rearrange my shop each morning to make a pleasant arrangement on the front page and throughout.  It's not hard.  It takes only a couple of minutes.  It's the same as arranging the front of a brick and mortar store so when people walk in, it invites them to shop and buy.  My only request of the web master is to make moving throughout the shop more efficient by correcting the "buttons" at the bottom of the page.  Just cut and paste the html from the bottom of the listings page or the sold items page.
