This is a new one for me. Last night, purchases made by someone else have shown up in my account. I only became aware when I started receiving requests for reviews. These items were not on my purchase list before yesterday. I do happen to know the person who made the orders but they are not connected to my account in any way and I didn't place the orders or pay for them. I don't think she even knows I have an etsy account. I'm the only one with access to my account. She ordered the items and loved them so much she forwarded the "It's here" email to my husbands email-she's a client of his. Then the fun began! Suddenly, I'm being asked to review them and they showed up on my purchases list!
More frustration! Etsy's response so far has been to apologize for being charged for this order clearly misunderstanding the issue. (insert rolling eyes emoji). I wasn't charged, my financial info wasn't involved but the linking also added the buyers address to my account! I deleted it and changed my password.
I looked at the html code behind the link in the email (it's very long); it appears as a big black rectangular button that says View Order. This is the beginning of the link code : https://www.etsy.com/your/purchases/claim?.
Anyway, I think there should be more steps involved to link an account but I get it makes life easy for those that are trying. I had absolutely no idea that linking would occur and view this as deceptive because there was no warning. The email addresses involved (buyer and forwarded) were not my account email and not ever associated with my account. So at this point I just want them to remove the purchases.
Thanks everyone for helping me sort through this mystery. Lesson re-learned: Seriously, NEVER click a link in your email even if you know the sender.
A final update…Etsy finally removed the purchases from my account and acknowledged a glitch:
“Indeed, it seems that these orders were connected to your account as part of a technical bug - this is indeed something we have seen before, and our engineers are working to stop this from happening in future with other accounts.
I any case, I want to assure you that this does not mean that your account was compromised in any way, or that someone else had access to your account.
It simply means that due to an internal Etsy bug, the orders were linked to the wrong account. “
indeed, that IS a new one!
some random thoughts...
Did your husband click on any links in the email she sent him?
Could your husband have ordered them for her and accidentally logged into your account?
Check your account security https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/1087958808206
I think the fact that you know this person means it's not likely a random hacking, but just to be safe.
Thank you for your thoughts! He did not click links-on that he knows better, lol! He did not order and wouldn't know how to go about it.
I will check on the account security. I did just now change my password.
Your husband may have ordered them why else would she forward the "it's here" emails to him?
He did not order and wouldn't have a clue as to how to do it, practically computer illiterate! She forwarded the email because he was polite and commented on the nice mailbox before installing it for her. She forwarded the email to show him where she purchased it so he could buy one too if he wanted to.
Did you check your credit card account to see if the purchases were charged there? Like others, my first thought is that your husband used your account to send her gifts.
I hope there's a good explanation for this.
Did you ask your husband if he ordered?
What kind of items are they? Practical ones, I hope.
Is is possible that, because she doesn't have an Etsy account, she asked your husband (who she knows) to make the purchases for her?
or since she is a client maybe it's related to work and he ordered for that reason?
Wow- this makes no sense. Let us know what you find out.
I think he's got some 'splainin' to do! (Desi - Lucy)
This for sure!
I don't know how emails for guest orders look like, but I am wondering if she made the purchases as a guest, and then you or your husband logged into your account via the "it's here" email, so the orders became associated with your account.
That's quite a streeeeeeeetch.
This sounds like an explanation that hubby would give, ha ha.
@DragoninKnots that might be it.
If she checked out as guest, and then he clicked on the link while signed in, it might have become bound to your account. I have heard that happening before.
Was this ever resolved? I'm interested to know how it all turned out.
@CreativeFlutterflyCo yes, if you read to the end of this thread you will see the outcome.
Thank you Amaradorn!:)
My guess is that the person for whatever reason asked your husband to make the order for her and he used your etsy account to do this because maybe you were already logged in so he just used it. Why would she be telling him that she got the item otherwise?
There would be pretty much zero chance that someone else's purchases would show up on your account and to me this seems pretty likely what happened given that she forwarded him the email to let him know she got the package.
edited: It could also be what others have said about somehow if your husband clicked on a link in the email it linked her guest purchases to your account. I do find it odd that the purchases only showed up last night but obviously she already received the order? Did she forward him an email from etsy? If so that probably makes sense because if it was a guest checkout they could have thought it was you?
You'd think the OP would have gotten the "it's here!" messages too then, unless the email address had been changed on her account.
Something weird is happening, for sure.
Editing too: I guess the linking happened after the "it's here!" and before the review requests were sent. ?
Maybe your husband ordered gifts for you and had them delivered to a client instead of to your house so he could surprise you.
Sounds like he wasn't aware that you would get notifications .
This was my thought exactly.
