A buyer inquired about an item she had seen and requested a different colour on a few things on that item.
I created a new listing instead of a private custom listing as this item can be sold to anyone and sent her a link. Within an hour an order came through using the abandoned cart coupon for that new listing.
How can this be right? Bit unfair isn't it …taking advantage, I thought it was 24 hours or so.
Can anyone use the AC coupon on a private custom listing?
..... it's 2 hours, not 24
Abandoned cart
If a shopper has an item from your shop in their cart for more than 2 hours, they’ll get an email offering them a discount for that item.
Abandoned basket offers expire 60 days from the coupon’s creation date
.....................
..... I also think it's not just for that item, it's for any item in your shop, so if they had put the original item in their cart, then Etsy could have it two hours after that, even before you created the new listing...... it's for them showing interest in your items
so it can also be used on custom listings
Until a couple of weeks ago, the help article stated that an abandoned cart coupon would not be sent for at least 48 hours, ie
- at least 24 hours in the cart before removing the item
and
- 24 hours after removing the item from the cart.
The article update to two hours by Etsy was a catch-up to reality, because there had been forum reports for many months prior of abandoned cart codes popping up in the cart much earlier than the 48 hours.
I started a thread when I saw the change to two hours. You will see comments in this thread about the codes popping up within minutes.

They should rename this discount to In Cart rather than Abandoned Cart.
I saved the original text from the help article:
If a shopper has an item from your shop in their cart for more than 24 hours, they’ll get an email offering them a discount for that item 24 hours after they abandoned it in their cart.
@AzanaPhotoFrames: As best as can be determined, the Abandoned Cart coupon can be used on ANY listing in your shop, not just the "abandoned" one. The buyer may have received the code days ago.
Any coupon or sale created by Etsy (not set up by you) is for anything and everything in your shop. Customers can buy anything or everything in your shop using that code.
You also have no idea when they got the coupon. They could have gotten it last week or last month.
I had the same thing happen to me yesterday but I was trying to give the customer a coupon but it wasn't working. She received the abandoned cart coupon within a few hours and immediately purchased.
I also just checked, when you set up a coupon, you can specify parameters of when it can be used. A minimum purchase etc. You can also select the listings that you wish the coupon to be valid for. You can select all listings or specify the listings you want the coupon to apply to.
You can't do that for the abandoned cart coupon, abandoned cart is shop-wide
Yes, when you set up your own coupon you can do all that, but unless Etsy has changed something drastically recently, when you use one of their coupons (abandoned cart, thank you, etc.) your only choices are % off and name). Since I don't want to change my coupons, especially right now, I can't check it out, but it's been that way for 5+ years.
Sorry, my mistake. I set it up so long ago did not remember that. Thanks for the correction.
Etsy changed the timeing to 2 hours. I don't think it unfair if it gets used as the buyer could always decide to walk away. A sale is a sale. I know some people don't like that but the current economy situation is a tough one that needs to be considered when making a go of a business.
