Price different in search results

Jump to solution

Hi, I have a listing for a hand painted buffalo pouch priced at £88.00. I just looked for it in the etsy search, and was surprised to see it's priced at £109.12. I can't understand where this price has come from. Is anyone having this issue?

Ugh, not again!  This is not a bait and switch issue (that's a different issue altogether), it's Etsy testing some sort of inflated pricing in search results.  They did this a few months ago - I'll post links to some older threads when my blood pressure returns to a more normal level, I'm so furious right now!

The prices of some listings in search are being shown by Etsy as some percentage higher than the actual price - in the OPs case, it's 24%.  I have 5 listings currently affected (including my bestseller); mine are all displaying 20% or 22% higher.  I set my prices purposefully, and Etsy has no business messing with how this is presented.  NONE.  That's crossing a line.  I presume it's a test to see if users will still click on the inflated listings, so in future Etsy can give me some sort of "helpful" dashboard message ... just imagine, "Our research shows you could be missing out on $xxx dollars!  Here's a new pricing tool to increase your prices by xx%!"

I was able to undo Etsy's intrusion last time this happened, @MokiTradingPost , at least temporarily.  Edit your listing (I had to make an actual edit, like adding a space to the description, or updating a tag), then re-save it.  Price in search went back to normal a short time later.  But keep checking - Etsy sneakily inflated some of my listings again, and I had to re-edit/save.

@MokiTradingPost  I see the same thing only in USD - when I did a search, it came up $147+ but when I clicked on the listing it was $118+!

Hi, I remember seeing some Threads about this a while ago.  If it's the same one I'm thinking of, items in search results showed the price which included shipping.  In the Shop listing view, it showed only the item price (as it should).

ETA:  I put part of the Title of your first listing into the Search Bar.  I'm seeing the same price, both in search results and in your Shop.  So I must not be in the test currently.

Thanks. I did think it could be including the shipping, but it doesn't add up to that figure for any country I ship to.

I have seen this before, but never a reason or resolution. When I tried to point out there was a problem with some listings having a significantly different price in the shop vs the listings I was scolded for 'calling out' shops.

@audreytherese I've been looking at a red and white bodysuit/catsuit. It is $50 in search and in the shop. I click on the listing and it is $222. Why? The "Hat" was $50 and is "Sold Out". So, within the listing itself the price shows $222 for the catsuit and the $50 hat "Sold Out".

I consider this as Etsy encouraging the "bait and switch" hoping for an upsell to the more expensive item when the lesser expensive item that is first clicked on is sold out.

Many shops do this. A listing shows the first image as a "large/good sized box" with a listing price in search as $10. A good deal...well, you open the listing and then see the 2"x2" is $10 and it is sold out. The 12"x12" is $125 and that is what is available.

Search should only show you what is Immediately Available and not show "sold out" options or people will game the system to be found since Etsy DOES PUSH lower priced options and in earnings releases say that this works.

Not fond of the bait and switch shops at all, I completely agree it should only show you what the lowest available price is, but I was actually seeing the opposite - listings would be something ridiculous like $10k in the search results, but only $200 when inside the listing. I don't believe that was a matter of the shipping getting added to the price in search results either, it really just didn't make any sense. But they weren't my listings (as far as I could find) so I had no right to bring it up to support and any attempts to bring light to the situation was immediately deleted.

Do you have a size that is "out of stock"? This is what I've been seeing when shopping.

Glad that worked for you, @MokiTradingPost .

Yes, infuriating, and I find it hard to believe it's legal.  Certainly unethical.

Thank you @DaysofYoreTreasures .  Here's one more:

https://community.etsy.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Some-of-my-prices-have-changed-by-themselves/m-p/1420...

There was a difference back then – you could also see the inflated prices on your shop home page, so it was easy to identify affected listings.  Now the false prices are shown only in search, not within your shop.  So it's even more underhanded than before.  Shame on Etsy.

I had this last week as well! I only found it on 2 listings, but have not searched all 200+listings in my shop. I also went in, cleared my price & reentered it, then saved it. It seems to be holding the correct price so far.

@TheLonelyHeartCo, it's harder now to find them - imagine if you had thousands of listings!  In the previous versions of this nefarious test, you could see the false prices within your shop home page, but no longer.

I found by searching for something generic (in my case, 'yarn'), then filtering by location to my small town, I was able to see all my listings quickly.  For a larger location like yours, and for shops that sell a wide variety of items, it will be more difficult. Adding more filters to narrow search down can help, or perhaps focus on checking just the more popular listings you're most concerned about.

My bestseller was the only falsely-inflated listing that I fixed a few days ago - unfortunately, the price is displaying with a 20% increase again in search today.  My other affected listings, which I didn't fix, remain inflated.

Last time this happened, I fixed my best seller a second time, and it disappeared from its top search term altogether (aka 'frequency capping') for almost 2 weeks.  Perhaps only coincidental, but I'm not sure I dare fix it again.

I opened a case on this with Etsy support yesterday. I asked if this is a test, and if so, for legal basis under which Etsy has permission to do this.

The support agent (via 'request a callback', not chat-bot) confirmed she could see the inflated prices in search too.  She stated she wasn't able to find anything indicating it was an intentional change, but that doesn't mean it's not a test.  She asked me to submit screen shots, which I did.  I'll report back if/when Etsy (ever) replies.

Hi all - Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Our team identified and resolved the glitch that temporarily caused inaccurate prices to be shown on search results for a very small percentage of listings. This glitch did not impact prices shown on listing pages or the amount that buyers paid for an item at checkout.

We'll continue to work to ensure everything is running smoothly and keep you posted on any relevant updates.

Hi, well its happening again, many of our products that are set a fixed price of 30$ show as 39.31+ in our store, an almost 30% increase. Could we just not? Why is there even code that allows changing prices sellers set that can glitch out?
Can you please help, i tried editing the products but the higher prices persist.
