Postage from the UK

Hi

Im New to Etsy - I made a sale and the buyer was from the USA - my postage was

UKL6.00 - but I took it to the Post Office & it was going to cost me UKL25.00

I message the buyer, who didn’t respond & I ended up cancelling the order &

refunded her.

Can I just sell within the UK ? Or how do I price postage to the USA.

Yes, you can limit sales to UK only if that's what you want to do, at least perhaps until you have a better idea of how to sell online. Go to your shipping settings (or delivery profiles) and remove 'everywhere else' so you only have shipping prices for the UK.

You can view all shipping prices on the Royal Mail website. It's possible to post office encouraged you to send with tracking and extra insurance and that's why the price went up. It's important to research and work out what shipping method is suitable before listing your items.

You also need to read up about selling online,

you need 30 day return policies on your listings, your address and e-mail address in sellers details, with the trader box ticked

and a gdpr amd privacy policy - you can copy mine , and change the relevant bits if you like.

When I first started selling I didn't understand how much postage overseas would cost. I learned. 

You can go to the royal mail website and calculate shipping costs by adding the weight and size of a package. I also include costs for packaging costs. I have found on my other store, that having accurate postage costs for overseas does not deter overseas sellers from buying--especially as I always post tracked.

Also remember that Etsy charges fees on the shipping cost which you charge to your customer, so remember to add a bit more on top to cover that. I find that for a £10 item the total standard fees work out at about 16% (if I remember correctly).
