Photos on Etsy buyer app not matching thumbnail in seller app

I’ve noticed this evening that all the photos in the buyer app seem to be much more enlarged than what is shown in the sellers app thumbnail. This isn’t just me - it is affecting lots of sellers from what I can see. Is this a tech issue or do I need to re - photograph my entire stock?

The app has always shown things differently from browsers.  If it simply a matter of size I would not take new photos unless you are using vertical photos rather than square.  The thumbnail is designed for square photos.

I am having the same issue.  I take a lot of pride in the way my photos look and now I feel like I have no control.  It seems that any recent listings (the old are fine) sellers page looks one way, the browser usually looks how I would like it to and then the app version is zoomed in.  I have always used square photos.  The proof that something has changed recently within Etsy is that my old listings still look the same over the many platforms (seller, browser and app).  TreasuresForeverGB, I would not re-do all your photos.  I have tried re-doing my photos and no matter what I did, the photos still looked different across platforms.  I looked at your shop via browser and via app and you are having the same problem that I am so it is clearly not user error, it is an Etsy issue.  I would hope that Etsy addresses the issues brought up in these forums and the problem is corrected quickly.

There are too many information with detailed explanations but overall, I like the advice from a seller which simply said...

Etsy thumbnail frames are now square, so make sure your main pictures look good as a square before you upload them. Crop your pictures yourself. Also, Etsy likes pictures that are at least 2000px. 

You can start from there and there are so many other helpful threads here at Etsy community.

I myself just realized how it looks different on Browser, App, Google search etc. and trying to find the easiest, effective way to adjust my more than 650 items.

It is terrible, the app is now portrait, the opposite to the old landscape, and not square either!

This is wrong, the app is cropping to a portrait 3:4, not square, and zoomed in also so it is even worse!

Update - started an online Etsy Support Chat today (after waiting for 40 minutes for an open chat), chatted with Kay from Etsy Member Services, explained what we are all seeing about the thumbnails not being consistent in the appearance across all Etsy platforms, even sent her screen shots of the Sellers page, Etsy App, and the browser page to show her how each looks different with the same thumbnail.  Also shared that this is not just with my shop that many sellers are experiencing this and we are all frustrated. Also suggested that an Etsy representative should start reviewing the Technical Forum for Etsy so that they are aware of the problems that are out there that are not user caused, this is an Etsy coding problem with the way the Etsy App is zooming in on the original thumbnail.  She reviewed everything, put me on a hold and finally came back saying:

"After reviewing the details, I see that I need to escalate this matter to our internal team for resolution. Our team will reach out to you via email once the issue is resolved."

I am hoping that they will really look into this and get back to me, hope it isn't just a standard response.  What is concerning is that from search the web and the forums it appears that sellers have been dealing with this problem for a long time, back well into 2023.  For me it just started a couple of months ago.  Fingers crossed that the "escalation" mentioned above is sincere and things get fixed soon for all Etsy sellers.  I have a ticket number for the chat, so if I don't hear or see that things are fixed,  I plan to follow up.

I just noticed the problem in the IOS buyer app as well.  All my photos looked zoomed in even though they look fine everywhere else.  The photos are the most important thing but there is no clear explanation in the listing process how they will look across devices.  Its frustrating to have to go back and edit photos that have been displaying correctly for years.

Seems to be fixed now back to 4:3 ratio
