Apparently, many people have had this problem in the past couple of years:
I dissolved my S-Corporation and began operating as a Sole Proprietor Nov 1 2023. Etsy would NOT allow changing "horses in midstream" (so to speak) in 2023 but I didn't have enough sales to generate a 1099-K so am able to separate the earnings for the two entities for tax purposes.
BTW, I chose to stop operating as a incorporated entity because I'm now semi-retired, not earning as much, and it just didn't make sense anymore.
Now it's 2024 and I still can't change my shop's legal information. Nor can I change the banking information because the old Corporate name is still showing and my new account will be rejected because the names won't match.
I, too, have "contacted" Etsy Support via email and keep getting the same response from whoever answers--which is to say, no support at all. Canned answers which really don't help solve the technical problem of not being able to change and Save anything. Telling a Seller that "you should be able to" doesn't help.
At first, I wondered if it was 1099 related and I'd be able to change, and Save, my new legal info once the 1099 process was done (should have been Jan 31st). But no. I still get a a big red error message that my changes could not be saved and to try again. If I've tried once, I've tried a dozen times since the first of the year.
The other (perceived) problem is that Etsy wants a State ID for a Sole Proprietorship also. That field is marked with a red * and is required. There isn't any company tax ID for a Sole Proprietor--at least, not in Wisconsin. We operate under our SS number here and the system won't accept it in that field.
Etsy: THIS SHOULDN'T BE THIS DIFFICULT!! People change biz entities all of the time. Legally, I am not supposed to be operating under the old S-Corporation name at this point!
Very frustrated. Any intel would be very welcome!
@Former_Member: Only speculating here, but Etsy does not allow the transfer of ownership of accounts or shops, and technically a change from corporation to sole proprietor is an ownership transfer between legal entities so maybe their system is choking on trying to process your request.
I’m a disregarded entity, for the state ID part, etsy just wanted my personal drivers license. As for the other part I’m sorry I can’t help. Im wanting to go from SMLLC to S-Corp and hope the previous poster isn’t correct about “ownership transfer.” good luck to you
@RavenHils: Etsy does not seem to be clear on their interpretation of "ownership transfer" https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040985353-Can-I-Transfer-My-Etsy-Account-to-Someone-Else?...
Oh, I don't know - about the unclear on what Etsy's definition of "ownership transfer" means. Seems clear enough to me. But doesn't apply. I am not trying to sell/transfer the Shop. Just change the Legal Entity, which Etsy's Help function actually has "steps" for. Problem, again, is that what they suggest I should be able to see and do, I don't/can't.
I even downloaded a fresh version of Chrome, deleted all browsing cache from my computer, and there are zero "favorites" or browser bar items saved. Nada. Zero. Nothing works!
Their Help information suggests I/we should be able to edit the business type, business name, taxpayer ID number, and all of that--individually. Not on my screen, it's all one big "edit".
I was finally able to complete the change, just had to include my phone number before I updated the store status from LLC to sole proprietor.
I am having the same priblem.
