I had an item that arrived damaged. After I refunded the entire amount to the customer, they decided they wanted to keep the remaining parts - so we agreed on a price for the pieces. I created a separate listing for the customer to purchase the parts. Because there was no package to ship, I marked the order as completed. This is now showing up on my star seller statistics as an order shipped with no tracking information. Since the customer already had the items, there was no package to track! What should I have done differently?
Possibly, in hindsight, a partial refund could have been done, for the difference between the total paid less the amount for the items the buyer wanted to keep.
You could have:
1 Used the same tracking as for the original package
2 Made a Digital Listing -- create a PDF saying "payment for xyz" that gets sent automatically on payment and does not need tracking
You could have used the tracking number from the previous order (if it allowed it).
You could have setup the listing as an instant download with a document file detailing the items kept or an image etc, that wouldn't have required shipping.
