Help! I'm looking for a workaround or suggestions for showing quantity available on items over $20 that I have multiples of.
For example - I listed 9 pairs of vintage lamp glass inserts. Because each set is over $20, Etsy hides the quantity dropdown button. (Argh!)
Etsy also buries the item details where I write "adjust quantity from cart"; this is especially hard to find for people shopping on the app. (Double argh!)
First, this causes confused customers to place the order repeatedly when they want multiples
Second, it causes cancellations because the customer can't see how many are in left stock
I just had a customer that wanted 3 sets of the lamp parts. They placed order 1, then placed order 2, and finally couldn't place order 3 because I ran out and so they just asked me to cancel everything. What a waste of everyone's time!
Any suggestions are welcome.
You can use the Variations feature on a listing to accomplish this. I use this on some bulk listings in my shop so buyers can select 5 or 10 of an item.
This would save the OP on relisting fees as well.
Thanks for this idea - it might work for me with some tweaking and I'll try that one out. I suppose in my case I would have to list each pair as it's own variation? With the small amount and large amount variation options, it looks like I'd potentially run into problems with people being able to buy more than I had in stock.
When you setup variations, there is a button you can select "Quantities Vary" . So you might look at that when you first setup an item.
Update: I just noticed that including variations unfortunately DOESN'T work to showcase quantity on my page. Still looking for ideas.
My listing for the lamp parts has 2 variations, both over $24, and does not show quantity.
OVER $20 - variations do not show quantity. https://secondsonghomestead.etsy.com/listing/4318185218
In contrast, my active listings with variations that are under $20 do indeed show the quantity drop down.
Examples of listings under $20 with variations that show quantity drop-down:

You cannot get a quantity drop down for items over $20. You have to use a the "variations" workaround & incorporate the quantity in the variations.
Example:
Lamp Quantity (dropdown):
1 Lamp
2 Lamps
3 Lamps
So the customer will select how many they want from that dropdown menu. It's not ideal. Ideally, Etsy wouldn't have such an illogical website
The only way to do this without potentially overselling would be to use a third-party inventory app which allows you to set a base quantity for your items. But those are not cheap, and take a lot of work to set up. Trunk worked well for me when I used it.
You can set it up so that you indicate each pair has a quantity of 1, and each pair is its own variation choice. You cannot sell something you don't have if you have it set up with the correct quantities. And the buyer will see the list of variations/pairs you still have when looking at your listing.

You don't need them to show quantities if you only have one of each variation, which is something you were writing about earlier.
If you do have more than one quantity of each pair, and you want to make sure the quantity box shows up, then you have to price things less than $20. It's ridiculous, but that's what we've got to work with.
I would like to help you but I cannot figure out what is going on. I have quantities listed on my shop listings and some of them have variations with quantities too. When you set up a variation you need to make sure when you click manage variations that you are choosing to have a quantity listed also. Are you missing a step here? Check the image in the link below to see what I mean.
I'm not sure how to put this in words - First, for context - I sell vintage items and I cannot create or find additional items like you could with a handmade item. What I have is finite and that is all I have on me.
Let's say I only have 3 items in stock and I list my variations as:
1 item
2 items
3 items
If someone immediately purchases the 3 option - then the variations of 1 and 2 are still up on my page even though someone just bought all 3 I have. I farm on the side and don't have phone service in the farm fields so I can't always manually deactivate a listing as soon as a sale is made. I strongly dislike the idea of something I don't have in stock showing as an option on the storefront. That's what I was trying to work around. I hope that I explained that well and that it makes sense with what everyone is suggesting! I think I'm at an Etsy impass and just need to upload a picture that will remind folks to check quantity from their cart and keep my fingers crossed I quit having cancelled sales.
I think you explained it really clearly.
Unfortunately, it works exactly as you described. Without a third-party inventory app, if you sell the variation of 3 items, the variations of 1 and 2 items will still be available for purchase until you can edit the listing.
