Linking Photos to Variants

I just linked some photos to their respective variants. Now, on etsy, when someone clicks on a variant (ie. size/color), the picture of that variant shows up. THAT works the way it's supposed to. But, on my pattern site, nothing happens when you select a variant. Why isn't the photo for the selected variant showing up on my pattern site, like it works on etsy?

Not all features of etsy are on pattern.

Variation photo linking and personalisation are 2 of the features that were never put on pattern.

Last I heard was that photos linked to variants get unlinked when the listing gets renewed due to a bug which has not been fixed in about 3 years. 

Therefore I advise also adding a key (assign numbers or letters to each variant) which can be cross referenced with the relevant image.

That's awful! Did you contact Etsy about the linking disappearing when they renew? If so, what did they say?
