This is the first message this person has sent you. Keep in mind, real messages from Etsy will have a "From Etsy" badge.

This was the image link in the message. Please DO NOT scan. I just wanted to share it. Be aware.

Those messages should be put in your spam folder so they are flagged.

It is too late to edit your post now, but you should never repost a scammers link or download on a public forum.

Re: Just a warning about a scam message.

@CryzalisDesigns Thank you for the warning. It is in the spam folder. I didn't know about sharing the link, but it's just an image, not a malware site. I wanted to inform anyone who likes to deal with these people. Some YouTubers are dealing with spammers for instance.

My intention was also to inform Etsy about this. If marking it as spam does the trick, that's good, but I don't click on malware links. I usually check the link indirectly online. Those specific links should be known by Etsy, and Etsy should inform the authorities responsible for cybercrime or something similar.

Re: Just a warning about a scam message.

@ValeryAccessory you are very welcome.

They are not always dealt with in spam, but the majority are, but at least they are flagged that way.

Re: Just a warning about a scam message.

@FallenAngelBrass, it's interesting that the sender's name is ETSY, yet there's also a warning from ETSY about it being a potential scam. The system probably recognizes it as suspicious but doesn't automatically delete the message. Instead, it leaves the final decision to us to mark it as spam, likely to avoid accidental deletion that could result in losing a customer.

This is the screenshot of the title of the message and ETSY also gives this warning:

Keep in mid, real messages from Etsy will have a "From Etsy" badge.

I also received this message & they ordered three items. Should I go ahead & ship the order? It has been paid for.

Re: Just a warning about a scam message.

This was just a message from someone. The buyer did not order anything. The name of the buyer of this message was Etsy. In the message, the buyer (scammer) shared an image link, not a text. In the image, there was a QR code for you to scan, and the link is probably a malware link, especially for a mobile phone if you have the ETSY app installed. They want you to verify your account. It is a scam.

In some messages, there may be these legitimate messages (warnings) from ETSY. It does not mean that the buyer is a scammer. It may be just a warning.

In my case, this person did not buy anything. There was just a message, and because they want to avoid detection by ETSY's AI or something else, they shared an image. The bot may interpret the text inside the message and categorize it as a scam message more easily, but if there is just an image, then it is more difficult. That is why I opened this post; it is dangerous. In this case, the ETSY bot had one clue: the similarity of the name of the buyer. The scammers need to be genuine, so that is why they use this name to fool the store owner. It is the opportunity cost in terms of bot detection, and the image is the balancer in this case. They are pure evil.

Also, there may be other ways of scamming new stores, such as changing the address and, after the package delivery, asking for a full refund, using stolen credit cards, and so on. There are many posts about these things here and different terminologies. You can find in this forum how they scam and how you can protect yourself. However, if there is an order from a buyer and the buyer does not want your information or anything from you, then you should start creating your product and send it as soon as possible.

Re: Just a warning about a scam message.

Is the order in your "Orders and Shipping" section on your dashboard?

If you receive an actual order, you will see it in your "Orders and Shipping" section and you will receive an email from Etsy notifying you that you have a sale, and there will be a notification in your dashboard as well.

@BeadsOBliss: "I also received this message & they ordered three items." Real orders will show up on your Orders & Shipping page and on your Payments page. If the order is in both places, are you sure that the message and the order are from the same account?

Re: Just a warning about a scam message.

I received message from a potential buyerwith that same additional message attached..which I responded to in order to give buyer info. they had requested….gambling that it was a legit message. Buyer responded then paid for order which I then shipped. I gambled…and worried aswell ….but this obviously was as mentioned a legitimate buyer. Still trying to figure out what “the Badge” etc. is all about….

@TheBrambleyCottage

The "badge" is only used to differentiate an authentic ETSY staff account from a general account.  Etsy started doing this due to the rise of scammers pretending to be Etsy staff.

Any message that has the blue "from a buyer" badge means the message came from someone who has a buyer account.  ANYONE can have a buyer account here so messages from "buyers" can be legitimate OR scams.  When you see that "buyer" notification, be mindful that it may not be from a legitimate buyer. Never click on links that take you outside of Etsy, never scan a QR code, never provide any personal details or credit card info even if you see something that looks like it's from Etsy support.

That all said, it does sound as if your buyer is legit since they paid for items.   A good reminder that one should exercise extreme caution but not always assume the worst either.

Re: Just a warning about a scam message.

Hey! I just got a message like this and clicked one of the images (but didn't scan the QR code), do you think my computer is at risk if I clicked the image? I'm usually so savvy about these types of things so I'm super annoyed/worried in case they've somehow go into my device from clicking on an image. Thank you so much!
