Important surprising info on abandoned cart coupon (freshly after Etsy chat) FUMING

I have listed a dress literally less than 14 hours ago. Etsy has sent "abandoned cart" offer to a buyer in less than 24 hours of the item even being on the site. Buyer applied coupon and purchased. Thing is, I was convinced that there must be at least 24 hrs for item being carted for this to even happen. I contacted Etsy via chat and after being pushy and not letting go, the customer service ADMITTED that now there is no time limitation for this type of discount anymore! Shouldn't such info be available so that you know precisely what you get your shop into?? But guys, keep reading, it only gets better. 

 I kept being pushy calling them out on absolute lack of transparency and it only got better from there... Here comes literal quote from the chat about the ABANDONED CART OFFER:[This content has been removed by Moderation. We ask that you please review Section 1, Item 2 of our Community Policies prior to posting.]. This made me lose my mind. We ask that you please review Section 1, Item 2 of our Community Policies prior to posting.] And I asked how on earth am I suppose to conclude from this dashboard info that offer ISN'T IN REAL abandoned basket but something entirely else ?! And can be sent out by Etsy randomly, not just in case of abandoned basket as stated ?! THIS IS LITERALLY MIND BLOWING. They have forwarded my case to specialists who should reach out to me via email. I will update this thread when I receive such email.

This is absolutely horrendous case of misinformation and I am not just leaving it like this. Especially that they had audacity to tell me I should be happy item sold. It would have sold full price and I know it but it isn't even about that anymore. It's the principals. How is it even legal? Even though I'm reading this forum daily and am aware of much worse things going on recently (refunds of delivered items make my skin crawl), I am still shocked. It's like they told me "yeah, we say it is A but in real it is B, sorry for confusion, hehe, ciao". U N R E A L

Yes, they are coming to our dashboards, and it's not even an hour.  I had one pop up while I was shopping for more items to add from that specific shop, and I hadn't even been browsing for more than 30 minutes or so.  If they're in some kind of tinkering stage, it could account for some inconsistencies, but I'm not getting the offers that quickly in emails.

@leinweberstudio: Thank you for this information. I have been trying to find this out. However, the item I am referring to appeared yesterday in 5 people's carts, and today nothing. Is this a coincidence?

its how it always happens i think etsy as days where they empty all items that have been in carts over  x amount of days. mine some of mine where emptied yesterday also.

It is a coincidence, and even though I am a super suspicious person I can't see any nefarious goings-on with emptying the cart.

My item was in 7 carts yesterday and in none this morning.

I am actually more given to believing that the entire cart thing is a fake, put up by Etsy to create a sense of urgency in buyers. 

That is the direction in which my suspicious mind is going.

Therefore, IMO it's unwise to get too excited about it as it's meaningless.

even if its real I would not get existed people put items in carts for lots of reasons most of them never buy the item.

@smallthings: When I looked at my entire shop, under the item listed there was a notice that the item was in 5 peoples carts.  This has happened several times to me.

yes as I say I had an item in 20+ carts yesterday when I looked later it was not in any then over today its gardenly going up and now is in 9. theirs nothing strange about it its how it always happens.

It seems that sellers have very little recourse when there is a problem.

We can not use the codes or we cane allow for codes when pricing items thate should always be done anyway. Its not good etsy change things and don't tell sellers. Technically I don't think they changed it I believe they still only send emails after 24 hours or more. What is different is they now also send offers to dashboards and might not wait 24 hours before doing that. They did not tell sellers they would be doing that before they started.

That hasn't been my experience. I've been shopping for supplies for the last two days, and as soon as I put an item in my cart I get the notification of the discount.

ETA .... maybe that is true with emails, I don't know, I have opted out. But the Notification is immediate.

When I see a significant interest in an item, I fabricate extras of the item, so I don't get caught short. One of my galleries, sends me a sales update everyday, so I know what they will need next. This helps me enormously.

Seeing things in carts here would not make me create more of that product; people might have it in their cart for price comparison, or for keeping an eye on it to see how well it's selling, or even to copy it.

Wow, then things have really changed. When I signed up for the Abandoned Cart discount (quite a while ago), it was sent to people who had items in their carts for more than 30 days. That's an "abandoned" cart -- not 24 hours, 72 hours, or whenever they're doing it now.

I have spent a couple of hours browsing thru Etsy. (By 10:30 am it was already way over 80 outside!) From my main interests, other things I might purchase, to a couple of handmade items I continue to browse for when I'm in the mood to weed out the riff-raff. I have 18 items in my cart.

Paused to have lunch & fluff the cat about 12:30ish. Returned here about 2:30pm. 

No emails from Etsy. But I has 11 - yes eleven - notices indicated by a pinkish circle & number in the Bell/Notifications. They all read "XYZ shop sent an offer for an item you left in your cart". The discount is in the 5 to 10% off range.

I was only gone for two hours. 

Adding that just now (I checked prior to posting this) & I have a 20% off offer for another item I left in my cart.

As an aside, one thing I found interesting:  When I placed an item in my cart, the cart icon displayed in Search Results never updated to show I had anything in my cart. I only saw how many items I had acquired in my cart by clicking on a listing I was interested in to see the details.
I did pause after about one hour & returned within a few minutes & then my cart icon indicated how many items I had in my cart.
Maybe Etsy should consider going back to showing the "current/live" status of a buyer's cart? What website doesn't do that?

A follow up to yesterday's post. It is now almost 6:00pm & I have not received any emails from Etsy about any of the items I have "abandoned" in my cart.
Yes, I am signed up to receive promos, etc. from Etsy & have checked all inboxes including promos & spam.

I will leave the items in my cart thru the weekend to see if I ever do receive any emails or if those immediate notifications within hours of carting the items is the extent of Etsy trying to get me to spend money.

Monday Morning Update - No emails with an abandoned cart coupon received from Etsy. The almost immediate notices Etsy placed as Notifications were the extent of the abandoned cart offers.

It is possible that Etsy might send emails later this month? but I simply can't continue with the items in my cart. Everything has been placed in Save for Later.

The pop-ups urging me to buy that vintage item - "there's only one left & it's going fast", that a shop has an item "on sale which ends in days/hours", were going to drive me nuckin-futz.

I just got an email from Etsy encouraging me to set up abandoned cart coupons.

I put something in my cart in my other shop where I have marketing turned on. It took about 3 hours for me to get the carted/favorited coupons on the notification bell. And  I got a "remember this?" email message about 4 hours after putting it in my cart.

Well, 

I asked a customer about how she received her code.  

It wasn’t 24hrs and quote “It gives you the option to click and apply the shop coupon directly from your cart. It also posts on the listing that a coupon is available.”

and yes, it is for anything in the shop and not just that item.

I was wondering why I was getting so many using it….even repeat customers that would have purchased full price.

Guess it is time to turn it off!!

So can anyone verify that it is a ONE TIME USE code given to each person?

It is NOT one time use.  A buyer can use it whenever they want until you deactivate the code.  If you go to the sales and coupons page and click on details under your abandoned cart coupon at the bottom of the pop up page you can stop sending out coupons, you can deactivate the coupons that have already been sent, or you can do both.
