Important surprising info on abandoned cart coupon (freshly after Etsy chat) FUMING

I have listed a dress literally less than 14 hours ago. Etsy has sent "abandoned cart" offer to a buyer in less than 24 hours of the item even being on the site. Buyer applied coupon and purchased. Thing is, I was convinced that there must be at least 24 hrs for item being carted for this to even happen. I contacted Etsy via chat and after being pushy and not letting go, the customer service ADMITTED that now there is no time limitation for this type of discount anymore! Shouldn't such info be available so that you know precisely what you get your shop into?? But guys, keep reading, it only gets better. 

 I kept being pushy calling them out on absolute lack of transparency and it only got better from there... Here comes literal quote from the chat about the ABANDONED CART OFFER:[This content has been removed by Moderation. And can be sent out by Etsy randomly, not just in case of abandoned basket as stated ?! THIS IS LITERALLY MIND BLOWING. They have forwarded my case to specialists who should reach out to me via email. I will update this thread when I receive such email.

This is absolutely horrendous case of misinformation and I am not just leaving it like this. Especially that they had audacity to tell me I should be happy item sold. It would have sold full price and I know it but it isn't even about that anymore. It's the principals. How is it even legal? Even though I'm reading this forum daily and am aware of much worse things going on recently (refunds of delivered items make my skin crawl), I am still shocked. It's like they told me "yeah, we say it is A but in real it is B, sorry for confusion, hehe, ciao". U N R E A L

Nothing of mine was in anyone's basket for ten days, then suddenly one item is in a basket and equally suddenly an abandoned cart coupon has been sent. Definitely nowhere near 24 hours!

My understanding was the same as yours in that these offers were only sent to people who had added a particular item to their carts but had not yet purchased that item ( it is a prompt for the customer to purchase the item they have carted ) so what Etsy are saying is that an abandoned cart offer = shop wide discount across all items.

Am I reading that correctly?

It makes sense they can purchase anything with the coupon, not just what they put in their basket, because the coupon is for any item.

And all they could do, is just add another, and wait for whatever time it is, for the coupon to be applied, which doesn't make sense, as they could be off somewhere else by then.

I get "favourite" coupons quicker than I get abandoned cart coupons

It makes sense with a Thank you coupon yes I can see that but not with an Abandoned Cart or Favorited Item coupon. 

My understanding of an Abandoned Cart offer is this -

 Etsy will send an abandoned cart email to your customers who have placed an item in their shopping cart but haven’t completed the purchase. These customers will receive an email offering them a coupon for the item they have left out in the shopping cart 24 hours after they started the purchasing process. 

Not you're entire shop and also 24hrs after being carted.

I don't use any of them at all and never have.

I would think, after 24 hours of "carting" one thing, etsy would let you have the coupon on anything, as you can't select which ones you have it on, it is all or nothing

@CraftyCornishMaids Well I would have thought that Etsy would use the listing ID no of the item that was carted to generate the coupon after 24hrs, This coupon is item specific to the item that was carted.

ETA - Please let me know if you do receive a coupon because I have none of these three marketing ploy's set up in my shop. I have never used any of them so as far as I am aware no customers who have any of my items in their carts should be getting any discounts offered by me.

For the first time ever, two weeks ago, I tried one of Etsy's features. The "Abandoned Cart" coupon.  "Abandoned Cart" coupon?
I should know better.

I am so tired of the constant lies and deceptions.

That's interesting, as I was under the impression the offer, once started, was NOT retroactive, for anyone who currently has items in cart.  Silly me.

I tried it with one I received. 

When I click on Apply to Cart the offer is applied to everything in that shop that I add to my cart.

Not just the one 'abandoned' item.

It even works on items put into your cart after the coupon had been applied.

I bet the change is why I've seen way more abandoned cart coupon uses in my shops. I used to get 0-1 used a year. I've seen maybe 5-7 over the last 2 months in a combination of both my shops.

Yep, I put an item in my cart and immediately got a popup notifying me I had a coupon to use.

Surely they need to notify us and update the specs when a change like this is made? The current help article is very specific - the customer must have the item in their cart for at least 24 hours before they "abandon" ie remove it. After that, the offer will not be sent until 24 hours after they abandoned it. @TheUglyJumperClub according to the current published specifications your customer should not have received an offer for at least 48 hours after you published the listing.

I am quoting the article in case it changes all of a sudden  - How to Set Up Sales and Discounts -
Abandoned cart
If a shopper has an item from your shop in their cart for more than 24 hours, they’ll get an email offering them a discount for that item 24 hours after they abandoned it in their cart.
A shopper can receive this type of targeted offer email once every two days. We’ll include up to 12 different discounts per offer email. If a shopper adds an item to their cart and then removes the item within 24 hours, they won’t receive an offer for your shop in a targeted offer email.

Oh and by the way, the cherry on the top of s##t cake: this buyer asked me for discount before purchasing. I said no, because it's a freshly listed item. Then they carted item, received coupon within 5 minutes and purchased. And here I am as a result looking like a clown of a seller

I never planned/ agreed to have all my items randomly discounted. So yeah, as said, I have enough time to push with this case because that's just absolutely mental. Pure, undiluted disrespect towards sellers. I'll be updating this thread whenever Etsy decides to explain this nonsense to me.

I won't cancel because this is not buyer's fault. They might have thought I've changed my mind or whatever. They got discount, they used it. My problem is this discount should have not been sent this morning within 5 minutes of item being carted.

How do you know who carted your items and when they carted them?  I don't know who carts my items.

Maybe your customer carted an item from your shop 2 weeks ago and got a coupon, so came back to your shop to get "that" item, but saw the new item and liked it better.  Maybe this customer asked you for a discount hoping for something better than your Abandoned Cart discount.  You said no, so she thought about it for 5 minutes, decided she really wanted it and purchased it using the AC coupon she already had.
