OK. I have just been scammed by someone messaging me and claiming they are from "Etsy Staff". They ask for your email address to confirm your account. And then when they send you a link to confirm your identity by putting in your card details. This is all fake.

And the weird thing is that there is no way to report this to Etsy. They have a user with the name "Etsy Staff" trying to scam/exploit its users and there is no way to say there is a problem here.

Now, going to check my accounts to make sure nothing has gone out. Buck up your ideas Etsy.

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

Hi, I went by the instructions from Mousegarden, and clicked on the manager, and the same msg just popped up, exactly the same wording naming the supposed buyer I clicked on my messages, and the 4 came on-screen....the first 2 were a couple of hours apart which seemed strange.  These are as you said, on the right hand side, the Etsy logo is on the beginning of each message, it says ETSY on an orange circle the SUBJECT :-Etsy conversation with Etsy support

from.conversations@mail.etsy.com>.....no  staff mentioned, and I don't know what the badge is/looks like?

Apart from my Granddaughter setting it all up for me, I haven't really had any mail from Etsy, only when I had a fee to pay, and updates about things going on with Etsy itself....I'm not sure what to look for, but thank you for your help. I will look for the chat, perhaps I can get the answers.

Have just checked in my messages, all show in the INBOX , none in  the FROM ETSY...I have also just found another of these message back in October.....says the same thing, but no mention of a customer. BUT it  DOES say ETSY STAFF.

If there is none in the "From Etsy" folder then its more than liking a scammer. Mark those messages in your inbox as spam so that it will not affect your star seller badge.

Did you get a chance to read the post that @FranceUponATime  posted? Sounds almost identical to what you mentioned.

BUT it  DOES say ETSY STAFF.

Do not go by what it says the message is from. Any scammer can say it is from Etsy Staff. That is exactly how scammers trick people. They lie.

ONLY go by whether the message appears in From Etsy. If not, it is a scam, mark it as spam.

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

@JacquiwithaQCrafts

on the messages, there is a big pink 6 line message, warning about scams, there is a etsy link to click though, there is a screenshot of what an etsy message looks like, and that the logo has the "E" offset, half off the avitar, which scammers can't do

and also, in great big letters at the top, saying the message has to also be in the "from etsy" folder on the left hand side, as well, or it's not from etsy.

That message does not go away, until you click to say you have read it.

this is what you clicked to say you have read

https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000343128-How-to-Handle-Scams-and-Suspicious-Messages?seg...

the first thing is about the "from etsy", lower down, is a screenshot

 Etsy will never send you an information e-mail, they do not have your e-mail address, they have all our bank confirmation credentials, please, the first thing you should do when you receive such e-mails is to check if the person sending the e-mail is an Etsy registered user, if the user is not related to Etsy.

From Etsy Help Center:

"How to Handle Scams and Suspicious Messages"

Authentic messages from Etsy always appear in a From Etsy inbox and are clearly labeled "From Etsy" below the subject line. If someone claims to be an Etsy employee and the message is not located in the From Etsy folder, mark the message as spam and don't reply.

You have bigger issues with ip than your bank account. Unless you somehow magically got permission from all those well known companies.

-no mention of what product(I make shoes), order ticket number, nothing, so I asked and no reply

At the same time an 'Etsy Staff' message

@GauchoNinjaLeatherUK

If the message is not in the "from etsy" folder, in the left hand side of the messages folder, it is not from etsy

it's a phishing scam, mark it as spam, and do not give them any information

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

The same has just happened to me. They message you from inside the app so you believe it’s actually from Etsy support as it states. They want you to confirm your email and card details. They send you this by email then a link to confirm your payment card details. The card is refused so they then send you a Qr code to Revolt and a code to accept payment this then and don’t ask me how they do it but when you try and transfer that payment it actually takes that sale amount from your bank onto the card. Then while you’re protesting with the fake Etsy live chat that no money has been deposited they take a payment to some account. In my case it was to a U.S skin selling site that has to have log in details.

How can this be allowed by Etsy system.
if you receive a message from customer support then on their app why would you not think it was real. Very  hacked off!

So now they are trying to keep you silent about their theft by signing you up to porn.

Go call your bank and freeze your account and any cards you gave out. then report the scam to your bank and try to get your cash back. By the time you do that your account may be empty anyway.

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

@woodsmancatapults

So sorry to hear this happened to you. It is easy to fall for, obviously, as many sellers have, especially new sellers. In case you have not seen this yet:

For future, any messages that are truly from Etsy will appear in your Shop Manager>Messages in the section named 'From Etsy' which appears third from the top under Inbox and Order Help Requests. If not there, the message is not from Etsy even if it shows in your inbox (anyone can send messages to your inbox). This section does not appear in the app, so check your messages on the Etsy site in a browser.

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

My kids made it clear to me that you never respond to the email or messages, you go to the site they say they are from and give the site the information. You don’t know who really sent the email, or called you on the phone, you will be giving that information to a total stranger.

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

@OmasFabricStash my mom got a call telling here there was a warrant out for her and my dad's arrest and they were the SS administration. She took down their number to call them back but luckily my sister dropped by and squashed that one. My dad is hooked up to oxygen and sits in his recliner most of the day. I don't know what she thought they had been up to to get arrested about but now I am wondering? Lol.

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

I'd just like to thank other members/sellers for taking the time to explain...when mails are in my inbox on my laptop, saying they were from Etsy...also in my Inbox on my Etsy account, it didn't even occur to me they weren't from Etsy, until someone said they have to say FROM Etsy....NOW I know, and hopefully, won't get caught again. (They only asked for me name, and email, no bank details which I would have never given over anyway. Thank you all again/

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

@JacquiwithaQCrafts

You might realize this already and I am just not clear about what you mean when you wrote "they have to say FROM Etsy", but it is not the message that needs to say From Etsy because anyone can say that.

Go to your Shop Manager (don't use the app for this). Click on Messages. Then look for Inbox. Under that is a list that says, Order Help Requests, From Etsy, Sent, All, Unread etc. Click on the one that says From Etsy. That is where you check to see if a message in your inbox is really from Etsy or not. If the message does not appear when you click on From Etsy, then it is NOT from Etsy no matter what the message in your inbox says.

Apologies if you realize this already, but it is important and I just want to be sure you do understand!

Yes, the important thing is not what the messages say, it's where the messages are located.

Isn't possible for Etsy to introduce an auto spam filter or enable sellers to block scams accounts?

Re: I've just been scammed. "Etsy Staff"

A filter may stop legit messages. We have seen how well their bots work overtime filtering listings that were legit.

But they could stop anyone opening an account with Etsy in their Shop Name.
They could also put a Report Button in the Message Center for an Integrity team to look at more quickly.
