I receieve a spam message

Jump to solution

Guys, I am a new seller, when I first uploaded my product, I received a message like this. I am shocked.

When I click inside the link, an order page (which looks really real) comes out, and it asks me to fill in my credit card info to confirm I am the owner of the credit card in order to receive the payment.

I entered my credit card number and then later I received a 100USD bill and asked for my SMS code. I didn't give him luckily.

But I leak my credit card information and I contact the card company to terminate the card at once. Sad experience.

I send this out, hoping to let all people know this new scam method and don't fall into it.

I doubt why the spam has a badge-like thing on their name which makes them look real.

------The message i received

Congratulations, your item has been purchased

Order number: 256528146

Due to the increasing cases of fraud on the platform, a new practice is introduced . You need to confirm that you are the real owner of the payment method specified in the system, this is done in manual mode.

(I deleted the link for the sake of the forum user)

Follow the link above and an operator will assist you in receiving the funds and the order will appear at your profile, thank you!

The buyer will receive an email notification when you have confirmed the payment and are ready to ship the order.

Remember, Etsy never asks for your email and only writes from an account labelled "Etsy Staff".

-----msg end

everyone please be careful. DONT FALL INTO SPAM

This is slightly different from what they have been doing. Thanks for warning new sellers. And yes, they make things look like they are real.

People must still be getting caught up in theses scammers or the scammers would quit trying.

They won't quit - they have nothing to lose and every now and then they will hit pay dirt.

Etsy has been warning about an uptick in scams for months.  Scammers especially target new shops because new shop owners are less familiar with Etsy’s policies and procedures.  The scammers prey upon this vulnerability.

@LoveMountainLife  I'm sorry about that.  Yeah, they're not always that bright.

After using various platform, i would say ETSY is completely nasty and disgusting for small business or new start-up. Plenty of spam in ETSY pretending to be staff, lots of fake IG accounts with 100k+ followers asking to help you share out your product that turn out to be spam. The user experience is poor for new sellers. Most importantly, after encountering various problems and wasting many time, ETSY will suspend your shop suddenly with no reason or email notification. Even won't let you know the reason if you try to appeal. I would say if ETSY officially do so much to hinder the development of newly open shop, why don't they use more time to tackle the problem of spam?

@KawaiiClothingStore1

I'm very sorry you were targeted by a scammer; there has been an infestation of these thugs. They are trying to get you to click onto links so they can steal your money.  Oftentimes it seems to latch onto when a new Seller lists their first item/s, for whatever reason. I'm glad you terminated the card.  When you get an Order, it will appear on your Orders  and Shipping Page. There is never a reason you need to give your email for an Order.  These scammers also pretend to be Etsy Staff. Don't engage, and Mark the Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for Star Seller).  I don't consider their Messages as "Spam"; more like "Scam". But the only option we have is to Mark as Spam.

There is an Announcement at the top of the Forum re: Scams.  Also, in your Seller Dashboard there is an Announcement of sorts re: keeping your account safe from scams (it says to "Get the guide"). Honestly, we need a prominent "Warning" (in red perhaps), in every Seller's Dashboard.  I don't think people are seeing these Announcements. Especially when they're new and trying to figure out how the site works.

Stay safe.

I just got the same message. I’ve been on this platform for not even 3 hours and I already got 3 scam messages. That’s unbelievable!! How are we supposed to trust a website that allows so many scams to get in it? And so realistic and deceiving also!!

Always look for errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. If that is a copy and paste of the message you received, you can see grammar errors and wrong punctuation.

Unfortunaly they are getting better with their scams.

So I always say, when in doubt, contact the REAL Etsy from you shop manager, click "Help", click "Contact us", then click the problem suggestion that is closest to your issue until you find the "I still need help" button. You will then have an option of chat, email, or at times a phone call request. This way you will be in communication with an actual Etsy rep. to solve any payment issue if there really is one.

They posted well over 2 months ago--probably not here.

I wish folks would start new threads and not pull up old ones with a new post

Yes, the OP is ''currently not selling'' but @ExtremeCreation still has some useful information for the next seller who finds this thread.

Hi, I'm a new seller and I got the same message as the OP. I got a security warning when I clicked the link, which got me to a page where you have to fill your credit card info. I went "Nope! This is a scam."

@Flexi3DStore

IF you even clicked on the link I would run a malware program as some people have recently reported malware loaded on to their devices--i.e., keystroke loggers, etc.

You also might benefit by stating a new thread instead of posting on one 2 months old. PEople will not see your post and will start answering the OP.
