So literally a minute after listing my first item I get a message that says:
"Message topic:
Dear MidnightNoodles, the buyer had a an error when placing the order. Please reply to this message for more information. For example: HELLO.
With much love! awaiting you're response!
And then a minute later I get the same message again but without the message topic banner.
Is this a scam?
This is a scam--keep in mind Etsy does not send you "messages" about an order. An order will simply appear on your dashboard under the link on the left that says "orders & shipping".
If Etsy wishes to send you a message it will be in the file marked "from Etsy".

Scam, a business would never say "with much love".
Nor ask you to reply with HELLO.
Nor would you get a message about a buyer getting an error when placing an order.
If the buyer had a problem with their CC info, then you'd never know it and would never see an order.
Did you not notice the info on the message page?
Right under that message and above where you reply it has this:
"To stay protected, stay on Etsy. Never follow links to other sites, and don’t share contact, account, or financial info with anyone in Messages. Learn how to spot spam."

Anytime they want you to click on something its a scam, they want your bank acct. or CC #'s so they can steal from you.
@MidnightNoodles Be sure to finish your shop (announcement, policies, public profile and so on). New and unfinished shops are a target for scammers.
Always react to your incoming messages: either reply (if it is a legit message) or mark as spam. Don't click on any links, don't scan QR codes, don't share your information.
And read the forums regularly. You'll find very detailed and helpful information on your shop and listings.
Good luck!
Slam Bamm Scam you Mamm
