Have you tried a different device? I can't respond to Etsy messages on my phone, but it works on the computer.
Is the convo system not working? Or is that sender's message no longer there? If it's the latter, it was probably a scam that etsy caught and deactivated their account.
There are a lot of scams going around—the latest saying they are trying to purchase but need your email account so they can send you a link to a fake etsy page.
