I'm trying to create a new listing for Christmas ornaments, and cannot find the category in the drop-down box. (I've typed in "ornaments" and "Christmas" and "Christmas ornaments" to try and find it.)
The closest thing I can get is Christmas trees, but the attributes are all wrong, because, of course, they think I'm listing an actual tree.
So I looked at the overall Etsy category list here:
https://www.etsy.com/help/categories
and I see that there should be an option for Seasonal Decor > Ornaments, so I tried typing in "decor." Lo and behold, the string with ornaments showed up.
Why anyone would type "decor" when they meant "ornaments" is beyond me.
So if you're unable to find the correct category, take a look at the list here (https://www.etsy.com/help/categories) and try typing in the name of the category above it.
I don't remember this being an issue with the old form, but I also haven't tried using a completely new category in quite a while.

This is a good tip! Has anyone tried it for other types of products?
@Adorabilities Thank You for this tip! Agree, I don't recall this being an issue with the Old Listing Form.
I typed in Christmas ornaments and the Seasonal decor Ornaments came up immediately.
Well you have said that the form is working perfectly for you.
Thanks for the tip!
I am having the same issue. This is my 5th listing today & it just started. Nothing comes up even close to what I type in. When I click on the link from Adorabilities it comes up as "Uh oh! Sorry the page you were looking for was not found". Anyone else have the same?
@fantasticalfunfinds
Try Googling "etsy category list." That's how I found it.
I also got the UhOh page.
But I persevered and found this.

Is it the same as @Adorabilities link?
I don't know, but I do like that you can get a glimpse of your competition's listings in each of the category extensions.
Yep. This new form is HORRIBLE!
Ughh, tried to find the category many times before posting on here. After I posted the above comment, went back to my listing page, tried the same thing I had been doing previously & now it's working!? Yay, but frustrating. Thank you all for posting here so I know it's not just me though!
Thank you @adorabilities I googled it & found the list!
The old form let you add a category manually which was good as some of the suggested categories did not fit at all! Or like a supply they suggest handmade/vintage categories (still happening) WTH Etsy??? I'd have no issue if I was listing supplies only supply categories show up. If it was a handmade supply I could list it as handmade or tag it handmade beads or whatever.

I type in the category from the list and it STILL does not come up. Annoying and makes listing even harder.
Type in magazine rack and get seasonal decoration???
Thank you for this tip. I haven't had problems until I was trying to list a doll dress yesterday and the suggestions that come up were very random. I finally caved in and listed it under 'Dolls' although it is clearly a dress, not a doll for sale. But then it came up with the message that it would be listed in all 4 categories mentioned - and the other 3 were totally incorrect - it is not a 'Lehenga' or a 'women's dress' or a 'sport shoe'.
The category list does not help at all, if you are listing from a desktop. I can type it in exactly as it should be, according to Etsy category list, but if it is a Men's anything, shirt, jeans, etc - it won't come up. I get women's jeans, boy's jeans, gender neutral or some random other options that are not even clothing or wearables. It's as if "Men's" or "Mens" was removed. This is a new issue within the past day for me.
I'm listing from a desktop and it worked for me. But I think it was determined long ago that the form works differently for different users. Some are having no trouble at all.
I hope you can find a solution, though. It's extremely frustrating not to be able to accurately categorize an item.
It seems to be fixed today. Maybe with the Etsy announcement they revamped the categories, as well?
Thanks for the information @Adorabilities!
I was doing a draft listing for a vintage wood dough bowl the other day and got these choices:
*bowls (correct!) *bonsai *stools & banquettes *clip-on earrings *bowling ball bags *desks
something strange is happening, some of my category choices on listings apply at all and I have to just choose anything remotely close--I will refer to the list and hopefully that will help going forward'
This is driving me nuts, I can't get any categories that I have normally use to come up, why does Etsy do this? I am honestly thinking that they do not beta test as well as they should, we still don't have the shipping cost working on the "new" format for listing.
This is so frustrating and annoying. Great that is works in some of your current operating system but why not in everyones? I typed in magazine rack and got "outdoor fountains" and "dice games" What the heck??? I don't even know what to type in to find my catagory as it is whacked.
I think we ARE Beta testing it right now and identifying the bug for them. And it's BS.
With the old form, the categories would come up pretty easily with a key word.
With the new form, I am getting categories that have nothing to do with the item I am listing, nothing to do with the key word I put in, like creamer, for example.
After multiple attempts, I finally found the categories I needed for listings.
I hope Etsy can fix this to work better for everyone.
