Hello All,
A customer wants an item customized, which I'm happy to do for her at a small extra charge. How would I go about collecting the extra charge before I pack and ship her order? Is there a way to do so thru Etsy?
TIA
You can create a reserved listing for the customization.
When I create a reserved listing I use a generic title and image and don't use any tags so it lands far back in search. It helps prevent other buyers from purchasing it.
Remember to use the same tracking number for the original order and the upgrade order when marking them complete.
@MetalSmitten760: If I understand you correctly, the customer has already purchased the item. In that case there is no way to *bill* the customer through Etsy. Probably the correct way would be to make a reserved listing and cancel and refund the original order; or you could do a reserved listing for only the upcharge but keep in mind that this will cost you an additional listing fee and the total payment processing fees will be higher than using the first method.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, the item's already been purchased, but not yet shipped. I didn't expect to find an easy way to do this thru Etsy, so you've confirmed my suspicion.
@ MetalSmitten 760 I have customers all the time decide to have an item personalized after they purchase. I have a listing that is for personalization only and email them to purchase it and reference the item it relates to. yes there is a charge for it and I've been doing it for 10 years without any problems at all from Etsy on it. We also have a listing that is for express shipping that they can also purchase after original order if they realize they need to change shipping method. What isn't allowed is to charge extra shipping or anything after they originally order if we made error on shipping, etc. In a case like that I always have them reorder and I cancel the original order if I feel there might be any confusion, or if there is changes in where to ship to I always cancel and have them reorder with correct shipping address.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I've learned also that there is indeed an Etsy way to do this.
I would add a variation to your listing that can be selected for customization.
@MetalSmitten760: Will you share with the rest of us what the "Etsy way to do this" is.
A way to do it thru Etsy as PotteryUrns posted above.
I found this video, from eRank, that may help some folks with similar questions:
How to Create a Custom Order Listing in Etsy
Any time there is a change made to a custom order request, it is essentially a different order. Therefore, that order should be cancelled and refunded and the new listing (adjusted listing) would need to reflect whatever changes there are and any price difference. The buyer then would need to purchase this newer listing.
Never go outside of Etsy to accept payment from a buyer. Etsy would consider that to be fee avoidance and that is a major policy violation.
I’ve heard many sellers set up a digital order listing for the extra payment due on an upgraded custom order, which suffices the star seller metric since there is no actual shipping that requires a tracking number. @MetalSmitten760 — Maybe doing this will work for you?
